Battery stuck in Olight
on: February 18, 2017, 06:53:18 AM
One of my Olights was fused shut and it took two pliers to unscrew it.
The AAA battery is stuck inside it.
Ideas?

Just wondering if you know what brand battery is in it? Energizer and Duracell guarantee no leaks or they will replace the item it leaked in.

As far as getting it out i'm not sure. You may have to drill into it and pull it out, but given its a battery that may be a terrible idea.

You cannot grab the button top with pliers?

Nah I can't remember.

I have tried that, might try again...

It expanded because of massive heat, so maybe putting it in the freezer for a few hours might work, hoping that the light doesn't shrink too much or it will jam even harder...

There was corroded stuff around so I suspect the battery may have leaked, but I will try that anyway.

You could try driving a screw through the middle of the battery and using that to pull it out, (soaking in WD40 first)
Things are going to get messy  :ahhh

If it was an alkaline battery that leaked (very, very likely), a good soak in vinegar should dissolve some of the crud, then drill a large hole in the battery and screw in a thick self-tapping screw to give you something to hold on to.  Don't worry about electrical discharge, its only a AAA battery, and it probably has no (or very little) charge left.

And don't ever use an alkaline battery again in something you care about - they have a well deserved reputation for leaking, especially when they are old or low on charge.   :twak:

Makes sense,
I've got some expired "kodak" alkalines which still have a good charge in them, but when they're discharged, they ALWAYS leak.

kodaks even worse lol, I only buy the cheapo 9 volt ones for smoke detectors, they dont seem do leak, but try changing over to rechargable NIMH, will save you lots of $ in the long run

Sounds like a good time to use the SAK corks screw...

Had a similar case with a corroded Energizer battery on my Maglite Solitaire LED...just stuck the barrel on a mini bench vice... drive the corkscrew in and pulled it out... no problem...

Gave me a good reminder to ever use alkalines unless in emergencies...

My SAK doesn't have a corkscrew... I specifically wanted one without it as I could never possibly have a use for a corkscrew:facepalm:

Not to be Debbie Downer, but I've had a couple larger Maglites that this happenedt to.  Even after getting the batteries out, The flashlight never worked again.  :-\

The quality of an implement in a multitool is measured not by how well it performs its intended function, but how well it works for improvization.  :D

For what it's worth, lithium primary (non-rechargeable) batteries work great in stuff you want to forget about until you need it. I've used them in my car flashlights for years. They tolerate temperature changes without much loss in performance, and maintain their charge for a long time when not in use. They're pricey, but if you're not using the device often then it doesn't really matter.

May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

That's good advice for devices where they might be unused for long periods   :tu:

For devices used a lot then NiMH recharegables (eg Sanyo regular low self-discharge eneloops) are a good (safe) option.

Maybe try the CRC electronic solvent and let it soak a bit? They are designed to clean open electronics so a bit gentler.
