... well, here we are!

Next door in the "Crazy-thread" http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,35270.msg1426289.html#msg1426289 Ulli showed us a heavily corroded Fisherman.
And there was that soft spot for neglected Vics.
And these extra-bucks from a lot of additional work recently.
And that tingle of "what will it be like?"
Well, here we go! This is dedicated to Charles Elsener, Ulli, Jazzbass, Ronald Schröder and Leo Baekeland!

First Chapter: The Arrival of Ahab

Well, the seller and the German postal service were quite quick, with a quite neatly packed knife.
The package ... reminded me... of my last holidays at the sea. THE SEA? Well...

... The sea?
Well... it certainly smelled like the sea (fortunately the better, saltier and less fishy part of the sea).
But also the sandy part...

mark the scales...

I did a quick Constable Benton Fraser on the sand and found out it was real, genuine sand, but also quite a portion of...
SALT.

Well... that explains an additional bit!

The crack in the frontscale had widened and the inlay had, at least partly, fallen off already, so as expected, the inlay was way beyond rescue.
I decided to let things sink in. Literally. Thus, do a quick bath to get rid of the first portion of salt and sand.

Second chapter: A captain taketh a bath to consider his future

I've had my share of restoring and repairing things, so I know that salt is an enemy who can't be underestimated.
Distilled water for a certain period of time helps, so Ahab is sleeping in there for a while, with a very, very cautious scrub.

The upper part of the inlay, the fish, dissolved alongside the white salty crust and left only that feared, brittle, pulverized substance behind that all lovers of vintage SAKs know and dread.
Bye bye fishy.

Before the bath I had considered my options:

1. Treat Ahab like a historical artifact, leave him in his state and only preserve the current condition. That's what I do with many artifacts I find while metal-detecting- halt the corrosion, try to get rid of any corrosive substances inside the artifact (mostly salt and moisture) and preserve as well as possible through right storage and tight control.

2. Be a bit more intruding into Cap's privacy, do a check-up, try to keep what can be kept, but don't make him a working knife again. (Here I'd  try to keep the scales, detox them and sand down, repair and re-use them)

3. Get off that smurf, see what's underneath, repair what's possible, get Ahab a new dress of scales and let him be a refurbished, near-vintage fisherman

4. See above, but modify with wood, custom scales or similar

5. Be a nasty pirate, rip out what I need (you should see these scissors!!!) and leave the rest to rot on the seabed. Harrrrrr!

By now you're quite interested in Ahab's inerts, right?

Here we go.

Third Chapter: Hard shell, soft core

What's the most mistreated tool? Right, those prybar-screwdrivers ermmm... blades.
The big one ( pic taken to show in dramatic light) got some scratching from stabbing action (poor fishies!), but in reality not too bad,
the small one is the first almost untouched clippoint I've come along.

File, scaler and scissors (with original springs!) nice and, apart from a nice crust of salt, nice and shiny.

Can and Screw almost unused.

Nice!

Who talked about modifying scissors with a notch to cut guitar strings?
Well, that looks special to me ;-)

But we all know it was not the tools that prevented people from buying Ahab...
It was the scales. So what about them?
Let's see...

Fourth Chapter: Fine feathers make fine birds

... and faulty ones make dead birds!

Ahab's dress doesn't look well. Bulging, a network of small cracks and the big cracks - exactly the thing we feared about the scales.
Did they lose the softener? Was it some kind of acid (Btw, thx Mr Baekeland) that leaked out of the plastic?
And why is there a stripe and a circle in nice and shiny blue on Ahab's belly? (I'll tell and show you later!)

But now: Time for a rest!

Great thread so far, I have a pre 1975 Wenger Handyman I bought for dirt cheap at a flea market that isn't as terrible, but needs the same treatment, I am inspired by this, I may do it.

Excuse moi, gentlemen- long day at work, far away from everything SAK.
But here it comes:

Fifth Chapter: Scars and Stripes

The images of the scales couldn't show everything about the bulging- there was even some white substance under the scales that was no sand or salt, but something else...

Thinking about Ahab's future I decided to get rid of the toxic, bulging and obviously harmful scales.
As careful as possible - warm up the scales, attack via the slots for toothpick and tweezers, gently removing what's left of the now-spongy and brittle blue plastic.

The backscale came off nicely, but dangerously brittle and full of cracks. Underneath, the rivets and scales were obviously corroded.
Oh dear...quite heavy pitting in the aluminium. Not deadly yet, but on the brink for Ahab...

Popcorn! Fresh and crunchy popcorn! Only 2,50!

... and the other side... here you can see what's left of the scales when they break - spongy, whiteish and brittle.

So, what now?

I decided to give Abah a new captain's uniform. This will take a while since it will involve removing what's left of the scales, some gentle modifications and restoring, ebaying, evil tricks on an unsuspecting fish and hopefully....

The return of the fisherman!

Wow, wonderful thread. And what a wonderful knife.
The eBay ad mentioned '1 altes blaues Taschenmesser Dachbodenfund' or one old blue rooftop found pocketknife.
And what a find. Imagine this laying on your roof for years on end. Doused with rain, frozen solid and baking in the sun.
Considering all that it surprised me it's in such great shape.
