Wow, wonderful thread. And what a wonderful knife.
The eBay ad mentioned '1 altes blaues Taschenmesser Dachbodenfund' or one old blue rooftop found pocketknife.
And what a find. Imagine this laying on your roof for years on end. Doused with rain, frozen solid and baking in the sun.
Considering all that it surprised me it's in such great shape.

Thank you for your appreciation!

I decided to bring Ahab back to full splendor- it will only take a while and I'll have to think up some good solutions for pressing problems.
I'll keep you updated here, promise!

Sixth Chapter: Looking up your old dress

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RECL4JJkVDE
Thank you Aerosmith, see you in May ;-)
Well, that was easy. I completely undressed Ahab to see what can be done for him and prevent further harm. Looking quite good, the old man!
I've tried all those visible and hidden potholes and found that none pierce through the scales- I'd even say that more than 90% of the material is good, the tools turned out to be almost as new under a thin coat of old and will polish extremely well.
So Ahab will remain in one piece, get a gentle aluminium-spa and the new scales. I'll  take off the bail (heat-treat, gently sand down the pins and re-attach when everything is done) and then give him a new (old?) look!

And here comes your part. Tell me what to do:

1. Find or make blue scales and try to bring Ahab to 100% of his old self?

2. Give him new, unusual scales - wood, something nautic ?

Your thoughts are appreciated!

Tomcat, who already ordered a new fish

I think it would be fitting to dress Ahab in some whale tooth.

(I have no idea: is it legal? affordable?)

That might end with a crucification for me I fear... ;-)

I think Dachboden means attic/loft - the space under the rafters & insulation. I don't think this cool Fisherman was stuck on top of a roof all this time... though I could be wrong!

Great project Tomcat!

Some people aren't nice. I have a pen knife with ivory handles (and CITES ceritficate) but outside MTo only my father and a few friends know about it. Anyhow, as whale-tooth is out of the question (and ivory too, probably), I believe any whitish tooth or bone would look great on a SAK. One that I saw in another thread had wild boar tuskers.

That's a tough question what to do about the scales.
If you could source some blue fish, I'd say do that.
But, if you can't I'd say put some wood on there.  The wood I recommend is called Lignum Vitae (latin for wood of life), it's a hearty wood, will last in wet weather.  I don't know boat terms, but this wood has been used on boats.  From Wikipedia, "widely used in water-lubricated shaft bearings for ships and hydro-electric power plants,[4] and in the stern-tube bearings of ship propellers ".
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

Ronald, you're a real source of inspiration!

Glad to be of help... I do the thinking, you do the work  :D

What do you do with the SAKs that you restore? Are they for your collection? Do you use them? Sell them?

Excellent work so far. I love seeing a used and abused knife left for dead then found and restored!  :tu:

Here is mine I restored. It gets a lot of use when fishing and I truly enjoy using it. I have the restoration pics somewhere. I will try and dig them up.

...So Ahab will remain in one piece, get a gentle aluminium-spa and the new scales...

Is this aluminium-spa a special treatment to seal the aliminium?

As for the scales,
I like the idea of Mobey Dick inspired scales, like legal whaletooth/bone. But because a lot of whalehunting is illegal or caught under flase pretenses I would pass up on this option.
Perhaps wood scales made out of wood from an old fishing boat?

I think Dachboden means attic/loft - the space under the rafters & insulation. I don't think this cool Fisherman was stuck on top of a roof all this time... though I could be wrong!

No, you're not wrong at all. I was confused with Fußboden, which is floor. It is indeed the attick.
Which makes more sense because I found it hard to believe that a knife would be in such a good shape after years of rooftop corrosion.

Seventh chapter: Delays, or: they don't make them like they used to...

Well, that sucks.
Got some replacement scales, just because of the fish, and it turns out the modern version is just a fake print.
Hey, Victorinox, you fake a metal inlay fish???

My plan was to dissolve the red cellidor, take the metal inlay and transplant it onto another scale.
Well, I've got to change my plan, obviously.

... that's right, first I want to get rid of anything loose, then try to bolster up and seal the rest...

This sounds very Breaking Bad of you... what were you planning to use to dissolve cellidor?

Ähm- what's "Bremsenreiniger" in English?  ;)
I was planning to try a couple of substances first, from long-term WD 40 to Nitro...

I think Acetone will do the trick.
I used acetone to chemically weld spectacle frames that were broken.
