52100 EDC
on: February 20, 2017, 12:35:48 PM
Hi

During my brief 2-day post-xmas trip to Camp Gecko my knife-making sensei crapped me out for having the Byrd Meddowlark in my pocket......."you are a knife maker, you should carry your own knife at all times!"  :twak:

I started another blade that was supposed to be a 50th birthday present for a Dutch friend of mine.  TinyPic is back up & running, first pic is the birthday blade, and the left-over of a big bearing casing that I cut and flattened on a previous occasion.

Last time I lit the forge both were rifined:

Not a  lot of material so the handle part is quite thin:

First profiling done, blade on top of the bearing that supplied the steel:

I mentioned it elsewhere, but credit where credit is due, my inspiration is the Pohl Force Hornet.

Played with it a bit and refined the shape - made the points more pointy which means more space for my fat fingers:

As you can see I'm getting something wrong with the drilling.  I suspect what happened in both cases was a slightly dull drill bit and I added oil when it started squeaking.......and that's it. no more drilling.  Accidental case hardening?

No biggie, but I wanted more holes to lighten the blade, not taking the chance now.

Hope to heat treat this coming weekend

I agree with your sensei.  Carrying your own designed and made knife is better than a business card.

Beautiful work again!

One of these days I'll have to get a knife from you!

Just before gluing

I'm still waiting for extensions to turn a bench grinder into a polisher, but until I get that back, this is the knife for now:

Okay, time to come clean  :D

I hoped the handle would help, but the fact is it's too small for my hand.

It sits perfectly in the hand, but at that point the blade is not aligned for the cut........could work for a stabber!  :D

Also, it's a but thick and a bit heavy for the intended purpose.  Keep in mind I started with a leftover piece of bearing casing and a basic idea.....

When these truths sunk in my first thought was I have to sell it to some lucky barstool with smaller hands, but.........I don't want to!

Once it's all polished up and I've made a sheath I'll post some more pics.

On Saturday I set fire to my shirt twice, I burned a blade that I was an hour's work into to smurf by being distracted, but I have to say forging the blades gives me even more satisfaction and I like the way 52100 moves.
Need to get a new hair dryer to drive my forge, but I'll be playing with fire more often.  :salute:

I suggest that you buy some thicker shirts, and maybe a nice leather apron?  :D

I doubt there is a knifemaker in the world that doesn't have a similar story- no good ones at any rate!

Understood the leather apron for the first time!  :D

I've got many small burns on my right arm from the charcoal sparking, fortunately my sleeves were rolled up and the sparks caught in the folds....felt the heat and saw smoke but no burns from that.

Most painful injury was a touch from a polisher on the dremmel....

I made the mistake of trying to catch an angle grinder once that was falling off the bench.  It was still spinning and I caught it by the wheel.

That was not the best idea I've ever had.

Thanks Tony & Dr Zoidberg!  :salute:

According to everybody the polishing wheel is the most dangerous machine in the shop, I know and believe that now.

That said the tool I like the least is the angle grinder.....also had a moment with that on Saturday.....

I was cutting off the burned front end of a new blade when the next moment the cutting disc was just gone.....felt to make sure there weren't holes in my neck and used a hammer to finished the job.......

In general my instincts seem to be drop&roll&get out of the way when I see smurf happen.

Ooh and I bought myself a leather apron as I keep burning little holes in my jeans

I have seen some very nasty injuries from an angle grinder blade that decided to break and isn't pretty.  I've even seen them go through a full polycarbonate face shield, so don't ever let your face end get in line with the rotational axis.   :ahhh

You are absolutely right to be concerned about that thing!

I hope so...       cause in my experience grinding against the edge like that doesn't always end well...

Sheath done, retention is more than adequate even for this heavy little smurf

photography lessons one of these years

Locked in reverse grip this is a good little stabber, and despite being a fatty it sits nice in the hand for cutting fruit or biltong......it's a keeper

That is beautiful work!  It came out brilliantly and the sheath looks perfect too!

I can't wait to see some pics of you putting that blade to work!

Thanks everybody!

It's a bit to heavy for the intended purpose so I'll have another go at making a true EDC fixed blade later in the year, since I'm a bit heavy for the intended purpose I'll use it as a fondler and occasional neck knife.  :salute:

Next I need to get busy with two kitchen knives that a birthday presents for my sister and a Dutch friend who's visiting in May.  She's complicated things by wanting a wood handle.....which is not my thing.  To make matters worse she likes dark wood, so my only real option is an old piece of Camelthorn wood I have.  My teacher has a one out of five success rate with Camelthorn handles, so I don't feel great about the prospect of that knife going to Holland knowing the handle will likely crack and fail at some stage.....

After those I'm determined to make a friction folder.....
I ran into a bit of a supply issue, wanted to do brass liners with micarta handle scales, but found out I'm not likely to find brass sheets........on this part of the continent

But I had a brainwave, one of my childhood treasures is a belt of .50 Browning cases.  I can harvest enough material from those, saw off the primer part then split it lengthwise and flatten....

Any ideas how to get them really flat?
