Tomcat's duct tape badge attempt - never buy cheap
on: February 22, 2017, 04:52:52 PM
... that's what I thought. Ok, it was about 15 years ago when I went on my small world tour with about half a year of jumping around in new Zealand.

So I wanted to be well-prepared.
So I thought "Don't buy a cheap backpack"
So I went for the most expensive one money could buy back then- a North Face Catalyst.

Impressive thing, made for climbing with a "pivotal suspension system" that would make movement easier. Pretty nice and worked well for the last 13+ years, but since rubber gets old, the praised pivotal suspension thingy eventually decided to break.

In Japan.

Enter my trusty Spirit and some DUCT TAPE (mini-version bought at the fantastic "Tokyu hands"-store where you can buy literally everything need for fixing and making things.

Almost forgot that I had made that repair since it held so well. Ony as the second rubber thingy broke lately I was reminded of that evening in Tokyo.

So, that was my story in hope for a new and shiny badge - here are two pictures which show my repair job and the disassembled thing, awaiting two new rubber connectors!

It's great that it has user serviceable parts!

Great repair and fantastic that you could get replacement components.

Leave the dents as they are- let your belongings show their scars as proudly as you do yours.

Thank you, boss!

Taking apart a backpack with a couple of screws seemed weird at first, but it was definitely an advantage.
As for the spare parts, weeeeeeell- no, I had to think up a creative fix which turned out pretty well.
I'll post some shots from the repairs later!

Which Tokyu Hands did you guy go to? I go to the Shinjuku one in Shinjuku (Takashimaya department store) during every Japan trip. It wass mandatory for me, as I went to the basement of the building for cheap eat at the end of the day a few times  :D

Aaaahh, Tokyu hands - I'd love to have a store like these here in Munich. I've been to the one in Shinjuku and one in Kyoto, and it turned out that my wife wanted to spend as much time in them as I, ruffling through all these wonderful materials and tools...
She's just perfect!

In Japan, the only thing I couldn't muster to repair my backpack properly was enough time, so I went for the duct-tape.

Now, 1,5 years later and at home, I spent a nice evening taking out the steel pins that secured the rubber, drilled out the rest, only to find that the ends which had stuck in the carbon-fibre elements of the pack could  be pulled out easily, opposing to the ones I had to drill out from the plastic part...
Turned out they had used some kind of cyanacrylat to secure the rubber. Not an ideal choice in my opinion.

I got some replacement rubber rod, cut an experimental replacement and tried the fit.
Not deep enough yet, but a step into the right direction.
Next stop: precision-crafted replacement rubber elements, my job for tomorrow ;-)
