Naked and Afraid- what would you choose?
on: February 26, 2017, 01:49:35 AM
For those not familiar, Naked and Afraid is a show where they take a man and a woman, strip them naked and dump them in the woods, tell swamp or the jungle to see if they can survive for 21 days.

Each person is allowed to take one item I to the woods with them. Usually it's a knife and a firestarter, or occasionally a pot for boiling water.

What would be your one item?  And what would you hope your partner would bring?

If only one... I might actually go with the pot. I can make a knife. I can make sparks by making the knife, or maybe I'll finally after decades of trying get a firebow right. But I can't make a pot very well.

I have often commented that they should have a third person there so they can have a fire starter, a pot and a knife.  It's a discussion that Megan and I have had repeatedly while we've been binge watching the show lately.

I also look at it as kind of silly because for the most part, they really aren't surviving, they are just postponing death for 21 days.  They routinely lose anywhere between 15 and 40 pounds, end up dehydrated and dirty, just waiting for infection to set in.  If they were required to survive longer than 21 days I doubt most of them would make it.

Which season are you watching, boss? If I remember correctly, participants were allowed 2 items in the latest season. The show is staged though, emphasizing so much about drama, with very survival lesson value. Discovery used to have something worth watching. Nowadays, it is following the reality train wreck. Real shame.

Back to the question, for two people in a jungles with water source, I feel mosquito nest is a useful item to have. Other is a blade by default.

I might choose differently depending on the location.
A third person would upset the "fantasy" they are trying to sell. Unless...

It's disturbing how many of the contestants call themselves "Survival Instructors" given how useless they appear.

I havent watched all of them yet, but it seems to me the couple that has a knife seem to fare a bit better regardless of the pot, with all things being equal.

So maybe a knife. But yeah if you got the skills then it doesnt matter. You can always make a knife, a pot, etc.

Whoever that is, when the zombies plague hits, can I be like your best bud?

Soft porn disguised as survival. Like it would greatly affect their survival tactics if they had some light clothes on. I saw bits of it, mainly to check the women out, which is why most people watch it and the reason the participants are naked. I do not bother with it. I think they were totally nude at the time, a few years ago.

A light, knife, SAK, TV and solar panels would be useful. And some clothes if they want to be taken seriously, which they do not.

I feel like the show when it started wasn't scripted, it was decent. Now it is absoloute dog smurf how bad it's got. I always thought the idea was crazy enough to work. And I thought they either all got a knife and one additional item or something to that effect. Seems to be the way it worked out.

I even tried watching the naked and afraid xl, but had to stop...  :poh:

Anyways. Id probably take a kukri and a jetboil  :D

Contents would be two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.

I watched a bit of season one.
I like how you could see their personalities change and quite early see who had the will to struggle on and who didnt.
Other than that it wasnt that good. It was just watching two people suffer and argue for 3 weeks.

Id take a good knife and a firestarter if I could. With the knife and a fire you can make more tools. You can make a pot from clay, bark, animalskin or stomack.
I guess the real problem is that when you are using all your energy to find water and food, you just dont have the energy or time to make pots and clothes.

You watch it too? The wife and I sometimes think it's dumb, sometimes funny, or very seldom interesting, but sometimes you learn something, we did watch that XL, which I thought was a little nuts..
The one thing that really gets me going on most of them is your going to be there for 3weeks, build a half decent sleeping arrangement!

As for carry ons, I'd need a good machete, maybe one with a saw on the back side, and hope she brought a pot to boil the water..

We are just a few episodes into Season 2.

We just watched the episode with the guy who grabbed the super poisonous snake with his bare hands then ate a toxic mushroom.   ::)

I watched an episode today where the woman claimed to be a witch, and rather than do anything useful she spent her time weaving pentagrams and headbands while complaining that the guy wasn't doing enough.

Most people on that shows are rather survival enthusiasts instead of experts  :P I have a theory that some were picked because the possibility of them failing is high, like that witch, or another model-wannabe spoiled chic. Some were picked for the negativity they would bring to the team, like that Alana woman. It was amusing to go to the Facebook page after each new episode to read comments, mostly negative to down right abusing.

Knife is too cliché. Try bring a magnifier to purify water like that Honora woman. However, she said she was suggested to bring it as item of choice, with a fabricated story about it being her Dad's memento. She failed miserably. If that was true, producers of this show is among scum on Earth, who cares nothing but show rating.

Back to topic, most people picked machetes. There was at least one guy bringing kukri

Me personally, I would bring a dadao (chinese saber sword) for maximum slashing, chopping, and all around cool affect.  >:D

There have been a few who call themselves "military survivalists" or something, including one who failed miserably but explained he was used to military survival and this was different.

Probably the only goal of shows like these is to up the ratings (why else the "naked" element?).
If you need information, go see Ray Mears.

PS to survive 21 days, the best thing to take with you might well be a giant pizza.  :D
