Help with identification...
on: March 02, 2017, 03:49:10 PM
Just found this in a local flea market for £5. It's pretty beat up but the blades seem ok. Anyone know more about this?

That's a good buy for a fiver! Really nice knives - just be careful using the bottle opener!

The wood saw is what made me buy it, it works pretty well too. Also I thought the design was pretty cool

It's the officer version if I'm not mistaken.

I've been dying to find a GAK, let alone one like that...

Great find! :2tu:

Speaking of identification - does anyone know what the Informatica knife in this photo is?

At first glance I would say a Chinese copy of a SAK.

For sure it is! Just look at the nail notch on the scissors... The round thing in the middle of the knife, seems every single chinese knife is the same design. No Victorinox's or Wengers that I know have that thing.

Thanks all. I figured it was a copy of some kind but the "Informatica" logo just got me thinking.

THanks!

Yep, Chinese fakes. Exactly the same kind i had when i was a kid back in the 80's, before i got my first Victorinox

The GAK is great - the ones not made by Victorinox are rubbish but the Victorinox ones are awesome.

The Chinese penknife on the other hand is not worth its weight in gold. Or anything else for that matter. Let it fester in the shop window for eternity. It is not worth having, even for 50p.

There's nothing wrong with buying a Chinese SAK. I did once, and I'll bet I'm not the only one. It's a good way to get a closer look and to determine all the differences between it and the real thing. Using it is something else. It will certainly disappoint you and may even be dangerous, with tools bending or breaking. But the price is too high, one or two pounds should suffice.
