Any advice on how to remove engraving?
on: March 02, 2017, 05:35:31 PM
Purchased a almost brand new Charge TTI at a ridiculous price only because the S30V blade has laser engraving on it which really doesn't bother me, but I'm just wondering how easy or difficult will be to remove it without damaging the blade? Do you think is worth it?

(Image removed from quote.)

you would have to grind too much metal off the blade even with a laser etch and you can't get it welded to fill it as that will destroy the heat treatment

Would solder and polish work?

I'd leave it like that...
It quite suits the tool

it would look awful, as Meca says it doesn't look bad, there are worse things that could have been engraved

Agreed- you won't be able to clean it off without removing too much metal.  If it really bothers you it would probably be easier to just replace the blade.

Leave it.   I personally enjoy advertising on knives. Many of mine are from defunct companies, or area companies my grandfather did business with as a purchasing agent for a coal mine. My only laser engraved knife comes from a local quarry, whose operations I can see out my door, as they're just on the other side of the valley.   It was obvious this was an award for something in '12, and chances are the original owner worked pretty hard to get it.     People's names is the only thing that bug me, however.  Typically, those get given away.

It is doable
I have removed laser etching from a SAK blade before using very fine 'sandpaper', took lots and lots of time/work
Everything’s adjustable

The etch gives the blade character,  :like: leave it there.

Yup. Use fine grid sandpaper. The etching will come right off. Just be mindful about the blade grind.

Also, may I ask how much did you pay for it?

I wasn't planning on removing the etching unless it was an easy and quick job, but looks like it will take time and a lot of "elbow grease" in order to get it done plus not sure how the final product will look, it's not worth it, might as well leave it the way it is like others recommended, it really doesn't bother me. By the way, I paid $70 for it with pocket/lanyard clip and nylon holster, less than the price of a new Wave.

I done it, not an easy job, like others said a whole layer of metal must be sand away along with it.

I did it on black H&K knife (not sure what was the coating), only took a few hours.
Then I tried the same on a 5.5" DLC blade, that took me about 16 hours.

I have a Charge with a raised titanium panel with laser engraving on it. It took me maybe 10 minutes to rub the lettering off with fine grit sandpaper. Obviously, you will end up with a scratched blade, depending on the direction you rub. Overall, it is not such a tedious process to be afraid off or you have to resort to a grinder to get done. Personally, I do not mind the etching on a multi.

$70 is a very good price

I also have a Charge TTI with the raised logo scales which I purchased few year ago and for reasons unknown, the circle around the letter R got chipped off on one of the scales, I have no idea how that happened or if it was like that when I purchased it new but I just noticed few months ago. What I will do is switch blades and make it my one and only special tool ;).....Anyway, thanks to each one of you for the good info, opinions and recommendations :salute:
