New for 2017- SOG Camp Axe
on: March 05, 2017, 12:03:55 AM
SOG has a pretty new axe available.  I got an order for one, and I was so interested that I ordered one for myself as well.

According to SOG:

Quote
Designed for hammering and chopping, this compact axe makes a great outdoor tool. Its light weight and small size makes it easy to transport and stow. Keep it at your side as a quick and versatile go-to tool for starting fires, clearing campsites, and hammering tent stakes. Don't go far without it.

At just over a pound (16.1oz or 450g) and 11.5 inches long, it seems like it would be pretty compact indeed, but hefty enough to actually cut something.  I have always shied away from Gerber's tiny hatchet figuring it doesn't have the length nor the weight to really go through much, but this one seems more in line with most decent use hatchets.

The glass reinforced handle should withstand most impacts and vibrations and resist staining, but we will see if the stainless steel (no steel type listed) head is the same.

I've never shied away from using the back of an axe head as a hammer, so I am glad to see that SOG intended for me to pound on things with this one.

The sheath on this one also looks halfways decent.  I hate it when you get a decent axe (or any blade really) and it appears that no one ever gave any thought to how to transport it anywhere.

Either way, I am thinking this might find its way into my kayak gear- if it's stainless with a nylon handle it should resist staining and corrosion (more or less) while being around water a lot.

It looks nice. Just promise that you won't be raiding or pillaging with it when you go for a paddle.

Doesn't Nate use a SOG tomahawk for his hiking axe?  This might be right up his street. :tu:  I'm definitely more of a traditionalist when it comes to axes, but even I have to admit this seems to tick a lot of my boxes.

I'm glad you said this Gareth because I seem to be drawn to this as well, I thought it was just me.

You could reach me by water, but the portages around the Hydro Dams will slow you down enough for the signal fires to alert everyone.
