How are Wenger wood handles attached?

Hey folks, I am thinking about a modding project with pieces from a few old Wengers I have.

I need to know how the scales on a wood Wenger are attached. Do the outer liners have the protruding bits to snap the handles onto, or are these outer liners flat (like in a Victorinox)?
