Help me choose my first alox!
on: March 07, 2017, 04:40:43 AM
I've squared away part one of my EDC, that being a Swisschamp and my trusty flashlight, but I feel like a alox would complete my tool needs.

I know for sure that I will carry it on a P7 suspension clip, but what model to choose?

That's where you fine folks come in. You guys and gals have much more experience with this sort of thing. Which to get? What colors? All opinions matter and nothing is too outlandish or weird.

Go ahead and fire when ready!

Farmer for sure, it's not too thin in hand and you get a marvelous wood saw!

I carry my trusty CT41 as a backup toolbox in a belt pouch and a pioneer most the time for the daily tasks.
You can't go wrong with the pioneer and if you need more tool power you have the SC.

Err, tough call. Farmer vs pioneer-x, I had the farmer for like 4yrs and that has been my everyday carry, but I just recently got the pioneer-x I guess it's just a question as to what you would use more a saw or scissors?

I find the Rancher gets more use than any of my X's. It's just thinner and lighter.
Difficult finding a Rancher in anything but silver so that's what I got.
X's on the other hand are available in red, blue, black and two shades of green.

I don't have one but the Farmer X looks like a winner.  I have a Farmer and while awesome the saw may have limited usage in an urban setting.  I quite like the Cadet.

I've been wanting a Pioneer X... It sure looks like a nice knife. Also there is a post in here about a blue one that was sanded, looks great!

Thanks for the comments so far. So because I have scissors on my Swisschamp, the Pioneer X is out. Either a Farmer, SI, Soldier or a Swissbianco fancy one.

Does the thickness of the saw make the Farmer more comfortable in the hand?

Who makes affordable customs?

Keep the votes a suggestions coming!

I find the Farmer is uncomfortable in the hand because of the stupid lanyard attachment - it digs in the palm. This is what led me to redo my Farmer with a hollow rivet. I guess you could just file the attachment off and then it would be pretty comfortable to use.

The SI really is the shizz though.

Now see, I think the farmer is comfortable, so it all depends? But if your thinking of going custom for a first alox then I would definitely go custom!

The Harvester doesn't have the keyring attachment. It also doesn't have a can opener, there's a pruning blade instead.

Pete Doherty says "When asked to choose between this and that, me I take the Farmer, take the Farmer every time. ...."

(OK so he's singing "take the FORMER" not the FARMER but still... it's just a vowel....)

In my opinion the Farmer is the way to go. It has the tool I want most on a full size SAK. Can opener, Saw, awl and a couple of screwdrivers. If I need a scissors I'll carry a keyring size SAK.

Doesn't the SC also have a saw?
If you're going to carry both at once why not go for something the other doesn't have, like an electrician?
They can be found with an old cross and they don't have the palm digging key ring attachment point.

I vote for the regular Victorinox Pioneer as an urban EDC knife - slim enough to be comfortably carried in almost every pocket and it's not pricey, too.

The wood saw and the scissors are nice, but you must decide whether you really need them - especially if you are already carrying the SwissChamp.

I would personally carry Pioneer in my trouser's pocket 24/7. SwissChamp would be somewhere in my daily bag.
