If you were going on the Alone show, would you take a multi-tool?

I don't know what the show is about, but I can honestly say that I'd probably go with a Swiss Tool or Spirit as those would be my be all, end all choices for the One Tool To Rule Them All.

As far as a stock model I would probably go with a Wave Otherwise I might go with my modded Rebar as it seems lighter than the Wave and with all I have on it they have the same tool loadout pretty much

I dont think you guys understand the show. It's primitive living, there's nothng there upon which to use a phillips screwdriver or for that matter, most of the other tools that are useful in a vehicle or urban setting.  Nobody has won who has not lost 50+ lbs, the most recent winner lost over 70 lbs. it's over in 3 months, everyone has starved out by then. They fail to understand how vital it is to acquire food, how many more calories per day it takes to live like that. (ie, 6000 per day) instead of 2000 per day lying on the couch, at room temps in a nice house. Losing a lb per day, as most do, means that they are 3000 calories per day deficient in food intake.  Only half of an animal or fish's live weight is edible meat and lean meat and fish are just 800 calories to the lb. Plant sources run about half that much. So they need to be catching/finding another 8 lbs of raw food, EVERY day, than what they've been managing.

My 10 items would be a modified Wave, the gillnet and hammock (both made of paracord, to be unraveled for cordage and made into nets), the 6"x2" roll of duct tape, the 12x12 "optional" tarp, a big folding saw, the 2 qt canteen cup with haftable lid, and the fishline and 25 TREBLE hooks. Given the tape, I can make containers, sleeping bag, shelter out of the 12x12 and one of the 10x10 tarps. They require that you dedicate one of the 10x10's for shielding the camera. The tape also swiftly fletches arrows and holds the staves of a bundle bow while you lash them. No more value than a bow or slingshot is likely to be, I'm not wasting a pick on one or the other. Nor on a ferrorod, axe, or sleeping bag. Why take stuff that you can make or do without? the batteries that they give you (new ones every week) will suffice to start fires. Any sharp edged hunk of quartz will strike sparks good enough to ignite charred materials, so the batteries (or friction fire) are only necessary for the first fire.

few or none of the contestants have a clue. They build elaborate shelters first thing, when they can't even feed themselves properly! what's the point, when you will starve out before winter anyway, if you dont  get lots of food coming in?  The average person should take one of chief's  AJ's slingbows, so he can use pebbles on mice, snakes, etc, to 10 ft, baked clay balls on other marks that are not worthy of one of the 6 arrows.  4 of the arrows should be fishing heads, with 4 long wire tines, that will later be converted into 30+  fishhooks. Fish will have to be over 50% of your diet and I mean springpole sets, floating sets and nets.  The rest of your diet  will have to be waterfowl, kelp, cambium and lichen.  Which is why you take the salt and sugar ration and the 5 lbs of chocolate. An oz per day of chocolate and surgar, along with a pinch of salt, will be a huge help when it comes to choking down all that cruddy "food"

one guy wasted an entire day whittling out a 1 pint water bottle, when he could have had a gallon container, made of tarp and tape, in 10 minutes. Another 20 minutes would have sufficed to make a stick "basket" to support said container while you carry it.

if you dont know to get paid as a NM corporation, you'll only clear  1/4 million out of the half million $ prize.  If you do know, tho,  you'll have an extra 100k to retire on.    1/4 million US will retire you quite nicely in Uruquay, if you know how to invest it (here in the US).

I would probably take the Workchamp for the longer blade, saw, and file. The screwdrivers dont take up extra room and the little pliers and scissors come in handy.

makes more sense than an axe, but neither Vancouver Island or Patagonia rate as being "jungle".  Both have very high winds, lots of rain and cold weather. google is your friend.

I developed the haftable lid for the cup for just this show. :-) It will get past any customs inspection, sharpen the edge later, on a rock

you want the ferro rod to be one of the tools in your folder, ala the Signal Leatherman,  so you dont have to waste a pick on something as one-purpose' as a ferrorod.

So far, nobody has won that's not a fatty. If the History Channel doesnt wise up and impose an upper limit on body fat %, like 25%, the show will devolve into nothing more than 400 lb lardasses just lying around camp in a sleeping bag.

why pick the given multitool? what would your other 9 picks be? Nearly everyone who didn't take food rations has regretted it. 2 out of the 30 have cut themselves chopping. When you are exhausted, starving, wet, cold, wind sucking the life out of you, jobs/tools that can grievously hurt you are to be avoided. Starving, cold, wet, it's hard to sleep much. Starving, wet, cold and exhausted, you make bad decisions and move clumsily.

2. Mid sized fixed blade knife, 1095 coated steel with half inch of spine uncoated for ferro rod, most likely full flat grind.

your life doesnt depend upon ANY ferrorod, in this contest. They give you batteries that you can use to start a fire. Once you have the first fire, you can have charred punk wood. Once you have that, you can easily start a fire with any sharp edged piece of quartz and any hunk of carbon steel. Some stainless steels will spark, also. 

Sleeping bag is a wasted pick, also, since you can make one out of tarp pcs and the duct tape, and debris (dried with hot rocks) When you have all the clothing that they give you, a small, low tarp shelter with a raised bed and a Siberian fire lay "aiming" heat inside of your shelter, hot rocks under the bed, and starting in late fall, you'll have the time needed to gather long grasses, dry them, tie them into bundles, tie the bundles into matts and use same to keep you warm, IF you make it into cold weather, which you wont, if you dont find MAJOR ways to feed yourself.

they only allow 40m of paracord if you take a hank of it. A paracord hammock, however, is 1000 ft of cord.. :-) 40m aint squat.

Passive fishing is going to have to provide over half of your calories. one 10x10, the one required for sheltering the camera, can be tossed over some 7 ft poles as an awning in front of your low, short tarp shelter (made out of tape and the other 10x10 tarp.  The 12 x12 tarp forms a sleeping bag (half of it does, actually) when folded, taped, stuffed with local debris. That leaves a 6x12 hunk for making containers, making a water filter, and if it's reflectorized, bits of it will attract birds and fish, to the point where your actual bait gets noticed.

the belt knife is nowhere near to being as useful as a modified wave or Surge, along with the hafted lid from the 2 qt canteen cup.

you will desperately wish you'd brought the 5 lbs of chocolate and the ration of salt/sugar. Cause fish, lichen and cambium is going to SUCK as a full time diet. Once they told me that I was in the 10 entrants, I'd PILE on the steak, cheese, ice cream and chocolate, until jump off day. If you go into this challenge with 50 lbs less bodyfat than the other guys, you wont have a chance of winning

I'm close to convinced that I'd want a modified Wave, I know that I want my 2 qt canteen cup with the haftable lid. My remaining choices would be the 5 lbs of chocolate, the ration of salt and sugar, a paracord hammock, a paracord gill net, the fishline and hooks, the 12x12 tarp (if you can't get them to let you take the 20x20 as an issued item, as they did the first 2 seasons) a big folding saw, a 6"x2" roll of duct tape,
