Challenge: There can be only one!
on: March 11, 2017, 12:39:31 AM
A simple question, if you to choose a single tool for EDC what would it be and why?  It can be a multi-tool, a pocket tool, a key chain tool, a swiss army knife or something else.  I am personally appreciate versatility, durability, ease of use,  quality of design and good value.  I am asking because it seems there are far too many collections out there and I want to know if you had to keep it simple what would you actually use if you had to pick just one.

Based on your recommendations I might buy myself something new after I sell off a bunch of dead weight.

SAK wise I'd be hard pressed between my Explorer Plus and Swisschamp.  Winner Explorer.

MT wise, its the battle of the best of the best IMO, Wave/Charge TTi ( since I have one ) or Spirit.  Winner Wave/Charge TTi.

Light wise its a brawl between either my S1R and Zebralight.  Winner very hesitantly is ZL.

I'm sorry I didn't answer as you asked.

Hope my answer helped somewhat.

Well at the very least it's information, which is valuable.  How about this, just tell my why you chose the ones you did.

SAK: Pioneer X - Well built and just the most functional tools.

Light: Fenix E05 - Also well built and a good value.

If I really had to pick just one I think I'd have to go with the Swisstool X.  Great tool set and overall capability, smooth and precise action, and a relatively low profile considering is size/weight.  You'll never convince me to give up all but one but if it really came down to it this would be my choice.  :D

MT: Swisstool Spirit X, always my favorite, has everything I need and nothing I don't.

SAK: Honestly a Tinker. It was my first and always holds a special place.

Spirit. There have been maybe a couple days that I haven't carried it since I got it.

Lightwise, I carry a Princeton Tec Pulsar 2. It is unobtrusive, fits on my keys and does the job with no complaining.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

I'd have to choose between my Spirit and Swisschamp.
My Charge comes to mind but it just hasn't got the same touch to it.

Light: I've only got 1 decent light and some Sipik/other Cree lights.

So it would be my decent light. The Led Lender F1R.

It's waterproof, has 3 modes (low, med, high so no smurfy strobe mode), gives out 1000 lumen which can melt your brain out while still being pocketable .
It's got a strike bezel for when stuff goes wrong but it's easily swapped with the delivered stainless design ring when going abroad/on plane.

Ok.

Lets go with Charge TTi.  I really appreciate the tool layout.  I particularly like the OHO exterior tools.  Is S30V a big deal? Yes when you don't want to fuss with sharpening a blade and corrosion issues.  Mine is wicked sharp and has stayed that way.  The bit driver IMO is wonderful.  Its really opens the tool up for more capacity.  Sure it take proprietary bits but add the extender and you can use standard 1/4 in bits.  It has a scissors which is pretty good.  Also lets keep in mind the many possibilities of modding this tool.

Zebralight.  I haven't had much experience with this light as its new to me.  I can tell you its pretty flipping versatile. I went with the SC52 so mine can take pretty much all AA cells.  Add Lithiums and boom 500lm on high and longer run times.   standard cells, no problem you can pick them up anywhere.  I use Eneloops which are terrific in this light.
I love how programmable this light is.  I can turn on moonlight and then if I need or want more light I have another option within moonlight, same goes for medium and high.  The light is well made and carries nicely with the clip or dumped into my pocket.  Seems to me a light with this much function has to be my go to.

Explorer Plus.  This tool can damn near do it all.  If you havent experienced an inline Vic Phillips then you are in for a treat.  The tool has scissors which are a must for me.  I love having the mag glass as well.  There are times when it just does what its supposed to.  Case in point, I had a deeply imbedded splinter which was a pain to remove let alone see what I was doing.  Pen, pin, as wells toothpick/tweezers in the scales.  Yes please.  Plus scales are the business.  The corkscrew is great for holding yet another tool, the mini driver.  There is so much win with the Explorer and in a decent carry package.

Wave for a single tool, or a Spirit standard model with a folder.

So far Clown is the only person who could actually commit to a single choice.   The idea of just one isn't so hard to grasp, i know you guys can count.   It's just a exercise I wouldn't take it too seriously and yet how hard is it to make the choice?  It's not like you're actually expected to make good and only use one tool for the rest of your natural lives.

Thank you Clown.  As far as I'm concerned you're a mature adult, in spite of your moniker.

If it wasn't that serious a question without any serious ramifications or possibility of bwing a legitimate situation, why get so upset when people didn't answer exactly according to the rules?

I'm going to assume your post wasn't meant as rude as it came across and let it go.

The Mt I carry the most and use the most is the Leatherman Micra. It would be the one.

Easy question, a pocket knife.
As for multotools, it would be the Skeletool CX. Every thing I need and it's easy to carry.

I appreciate all of the answers I have read so far--even from you rule-breakers who cannot follow directions . :twak:

For me, it would be the Swiss Champ. I had thought about justing carrying the Explorer Plus but I cannot do without some sort of pliers (aka metal fingertips). I also carry a Squirt PS4 but it is much easier to grab my Swiss Champ from my belt sheath rather than dig through my pocket to get my PS4.
The right tool is the one you have on you

Swisstool Spirit S without question. I don't need scissors and the ones in the spirit x are not that useful I'm my opinion. Much rather have a plain edge and serrated blade. The other tools speak for themselves.overall i think it beats the Wave as a multitool.

Swisstool X for me. It has a very complete and capable toolset as well as being very impervious to rust which is important if it is your only tool.

If I had to choose just one it would be the Leatherman Surge. It has the full tool load out that I use the most and the removable diamond file means you can use it to sharpen it's own blades & scissors if needed.  That plus the bit exchanger, and being able to use any T-shank saw blades in it, makes it ideal for me. It's maybe why I have 3 of them, so far.

I've never had a problem with rusting on any of mine, not even with the one that lives permanently in my car. It gets taken out and maintained regularly so it won't be a problem.

Hard toss up between the Trailmaster and Pioneer X...

I'd go with the Trailmaster the pen and file beat the X's cool factor.

For a MT I'd go with the ParaTool
