Review of my new S557 AKA toolbox
on: March 12, 2017, 12:50:47 AM
So I ordered one of the S557's with the red scales and man I love it! I find myself using it everyday for things, nail filing cutting letters boxes, opening wine and soda even picked s lock with it. I've used every tool in there for something. For a while I thought I would miss not having a saw like you see on the camper II for example but after reading reviews about its lack of use I don't miss it. I don't even mind how thick it is.  The only con is the Phillips screw driver is hard to get out as Is the scissors.

Congrats!

We were chatting about lock picking using a sak in another thread.  What tool or tools did you use?

How does this sak compare to the Swisschamp, size wise?

I used the toothpick and paperclip to pick the lock. The size is drastically smaller then the swisschalp easily fits in my pocket

Man, I had no idea that the Wenger comes with a paperclip!  That is sweet!!  LOL

How's the other tools compared to the Swisschamp, usefulness wise like mag vs mag, scissors vs scissors, etc.?  I am asking cause I heard that they were not as good so curious!

Whoops that was meant to be tweezers and toothpick and and I have the victorinox version. I have found the durability and quality of the tools spot on especially that scissors and wrench very dependable. I didn't get the Swiss champ because it's too big for a daily picket carry this one isn't.

Shows you how much I know about that model.  I thought it had the mag lens in it.  LOL

@FolderBeholder - nice overview video!

Some months ago I had a S557 lent to me for testing by a buddy of mine. I's a great SAK, very feature-rich for its size.
The only thing that bugged my was the postition of the wrench right in the centre of the knife. This made it next to useless for me in most situations, the thickness of the other layers always got in the way.
Bit of a strange design decision.
But other than that you can't go wrong with one.  :tu:

I'm just about to watch this YouTube video about the S557.
I have 2 of these and I think they are actually a very nice size for all the tools they contain. The shorter length of the Delemont line of Vics makes them a little more pockatable.

When mine came, the wrench and phillips screw driver were awfully stiff, so I just put a drop of oil on each and worked them back and forth for about a minute each and they open easily now.

SG, I can't remember if you have a SwissChamp or not, but is it possible to snap a quick photo of them side by side and front by front if you do?
I'm trying to get an idea of size in comparison.

One of the reasons I like it is because it's a bit wider and feels like you have a whole toolbox at your fingertips in your pocket
