EDC coin / lucky coin?
on: March 14, 2017, 04:41:47 PM
Anyone here carry a lucky coin (or similar) with them most days? Nothing practical, just something that perhaps means something to you and is on hand for any fidgety fingers? I've started to carry this 1979 American dollar with me of late:

This obviously serves not practical use here in Wales, but it's a great reminder of a fantastic trip me and my girlfriend took to the states a few years ago. I love the back design too - an eagle on the moon?!

For the longest time I hoarded these Dollar coins.  I remember when the first appeared and were mistakenly given instead of a US quarter ( similar size ).  I also recall a certain vending machine locally that gave those as change.

The 79' was the year they ( US mint ) produced these coins but eventually it was stopped as a result of this coin being mistaken for our US quarter.

I received a similar one from a friend back in school who didn't have any use for it.
Still got it to this day.

It's got a man's head in complete sideview and the same back, which is indeed really cool!

Are usual dollar coins bigger than this?

Modern US currency uses a 1$ bill. Older coins are much bigger. I have carried a 1884 US Silver Dollar the last couple of years and it is around 1.5" in diameter. The coin has no value above the silver value and no sentimental value and I don't fiddle with it much but from time to time it comes out to decide a coin toss.

I carry a flat tool in coin holder, have for likely 30 years or more.

One Dollar coins are used in parking pay stations to provide change for paper currency as coin dispensers are much less expensive than note dispensers.

I have carried different coins like this over the years at different times :tu: I am as of late carrying the 10 year MTO poker chip and love having it around as it is lighter in weight than most coins that I have carried and I don't have to worry about spending it if it gets mixed up with my other change :D

I carry a pair of 1976 US quarters. The ferryman will charge extra for shipping when the time comes- hazardous materials, oversized package.

Sometimes have challenge coins with me, but not very often. I have to be going someplace where it would be likely to be needed.

When I was younger I also used to carry around a 1960s UK threepence coin - just because it was so strange looking to me at the time.

The US dollar coins are so interesting to me though.

Edit - this was in the early 90s - that's why it was strange to me!

Have you seen a Canadian two dollar coin?

We first got the $1 coin to replace our paper bills in the mid 80's.  It had a loon on it so people took to calling it a Loonie.

In the 90's the $2 coin came out and people started calling it a Toonie, because it's two Loonies.

Now we are all scared of possibly getting a $5 coin....  :ahhh

Ask and ye shall receive.

I can try to get some actual pics of real ones tomorrow if you like, but meanwhile you can enjoy this lovely pic that I shamelessly stole from Wikipedia.

I think they could cut down on the number of coins for euros...

OT: I'm planning to carry the Johnson Gasolene/Chicago Worlds fair 1933 (a century of progress 1833-1933) commemorative coin I just got. I plan to clean it up a tad as it's a bit dirty, and I'm not concerned with the face value. It's more about Johnson (my last name) and Johnson Gasolene/Oil from Chicago,  and the world fair of Chicago where my dad was born. It's like triple trifecta of cool.

not mine, but this is what it looks like:

Round off numbers to the nearest 10 cents, like in New Zealand, and you can get rid of the brown coins.  :D
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

honestly, the 2C euro coin is a complete waste.

Canada got rid of the penny, everything is rounded to nearest 5C, sounds like an excellent plan to me.

Another one for the anniversary chip. I've carried once since I got them. It's great to sit and fiddle with.

At work when asked what it is I just say it's my ten year chip and they are all to scared to ask any more as they assume its a ten year sober chip or something  :D

So true, sadly here in Sweden we are going the other way and adding useless denominations.
They removed the 50 öre (0.5 SEK) a couple of years ago but now they added a 2 SEK coin as part of a project to replace all our coins (still, at only four denominations I can't complain too much).
And instead of doing anything interesting like how the British coins combine to show the shield we decided to base our new design on a 1972 ballad "sun, wind and water".

Any trip to europe for me results in a pocket full of copper coins that I just can't do anything with!

Same goes for visiting the UK, I made a thing about saving all the 1p I got while I studied there for 3 months and ended up with over 3£.
