They can be a little mysterious, maybe shunned, but these Amefa-made Dutch Army Knives need love too!

This thread is part-info and part-photo-goodness, like the Wenger SI thread!  8)
(Of course, knowing ya'll, it will probably be derailed.  :facepalm: )
I will post links later to other Amefa threads, for info and reference purposes.

First and foremost:
I have no alox to compare it to, the best I have is recent celidor. There have been threads with alox comparisons though.  :pok:

Mine is the '72(?)-'74 pattern, with a bottle opener opposite the awl, a straight blade in its own layer and no can opener. Some would carry it just because of the unusual toolset.  :D

In terms of robustness and strength, I think its equal to Vic.
Fit and finish? Not so good.


The scales appear to have the same texture as Vic alox.(But they might be thicker? Can anyone compare to a modern Alox and '70s soldier?)
The rivets stick out a little on the backside, though I don't notice it usually.

The Awl is Good. It is the only polished tool, and I would say its almost exactly like the Vic awl.  :tu:  :D

I think the Bottle opener is the thick beefy version(thicker than modern alox) also present in Vic soldiers of the same era(Can anyone check?), and has the scraper.  :tu:
(Though it tapers at the point slightly thinner than a modern celidor, can anyone compare to a '70s soldier?)
The Vic soldier bottle opener from same era is also unpolished, I hear.

The Bail is Good.  :D  :tu:

That leaves the blade. It appears to start tapering around 2/3 up*, like a Wenger SI(So I hear) so its stout. But it has less belly(?). Its also unpolished.

On mine, the springs are strong, but not too much. Some apparently have weak or nailbreaker springs.
The awl spring is also misaligned with the scales when the awl is closed, right where it sits*.
The bottle opener has a slight wiggle that comes and goes in the fully open position, but thats just mine I think.
The Nickle-Brass liner is dull, but you know, its old and used!

*Probably only applies to the 72(?)-74 Amefa pattern

KL74... From 1972(?) to 1974, Amefa made this curious pattern for the dutch army.  :D
Main blade in one layer, Awl and Bottle opener in another layer.
Why did the dutch army not want the can opener? The answer will probably be never known.  :( ;)

First, I am 75% Dutch.
Second, having a can opener in Dutch army recruit hands, may just have made it a complicated tool.  As configured it is still a simple tool.

But you're right - you'd think soldiers would need a can opener more than most people. Mysterious!

They issued Victorinox Soldiers in 1983-1992, with the exception of 1984.
Before that they Issued Amefa. But I can't find any information about the timeframe.

Is there somewhere I can find more info on this?

There have been other threads talking about amefa, and I do know that Amefa made DAKs from at least the 1960's to when victorinox took over. 
There was a DAK design in the 1960's, another for a few years around 1974(See picture) and then they used the Victorinox Soldier design after that.  :think:
So at least 3 different designs/patterns

I really like that that the tools and scales feel slightly more chunky on  the AMEFA than Victorinox, also the blade seems to hold an edge a little longer, however the tolerances on modern Vics is far superior. ( I don't own a victorinox of similar age to compare) I got this one as it's my birth year but don't carry it- I miss the small screwdriver from on the can opener too much

Do you have a scale you could weigh it on?  We could compare it to a Vic. I don't have a '78 but I have an '81, probably close enough  :cheers:
