Who's up for some canned goods and stitches?
on: March 18, 2017, 06:19:52 AM
I was testing out these old can openers and realized how good we have it today.  These are awful and dangerous.
The dog leg opener cuts well but it leaves a very sharp edge pointed straight up.
But I guess this is better than using a hammer and chisel like in the 19th century.
When you consider that cuts used to be potentially fatal and some people got lead poisoning from the solder, I would have to consider canned food slightly safer than starvation at that time.
It reminds me of the stories my mother in law told me about the one room schoolhouse she attended as a child.  At lunch time, the teacher would pull a large hunk of beef out of the freezer and chip some off with a rusty axe that was leaning against a tree outside.

Every time I handle my British Army Knife I think the can opener is just so crude. I'll put that down as "progress" ...

It works well though if I remember right though  :salute: Much of the BAK was crude wasn't it? The SAK is much more refined.
