So what's the difference between 'a collection' and merely owning lots of something?  Would having more bikes than you can ride at once count as a collection?  Asking for a friend. ;)

In my opinion, owning 2 or even 3 bikes does not really mean you're collecting bikes, since they can serve a different purpose.

For example, I own 3 mountainbikes, one of them is the first mountainbike I bought, back in the early '90s,it's a "cheap" 7 speed shimano bike made by Minerva and I don't use this one anymore.  I also own a hardtail Merida, which serves as "mud-bike", meaning this is the one I'll use when it's really, REALLY muddy. And then I also have my Merida Mission, which is a full-suspension carbon fiber frame bike, which I use most of the time (if it's not too wet).

So each bike has its own purpose (except the old Minerva, but that one has sentimental value).

If I would own like 6 (or more) bikes, and they would all be the same type of bike, meaning hardtail or full suspension, I would say that I collect bikes ...

Just my humble opinion, as always  ;).

Come to think of it, I also own 11 watches, and +30 caps (mostly F1 caps from Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve, David Coulthard, Mark Webber, and a lot of Kimi Räikkönen ...), I own about 20 (or more  ::)) scale models from GP500, MotoGP and Superbike bikes, and a couple of Formula 1 cars, also some Rally cars, mini driver helmets, ....

I think I might be a hoarder ...

My definition of a multitool/knife collection is when you buy tools/knives knowing that you don't really need them; and in fact probably won't ever really use them seriously for their intended purpose - so you buy them just to have, look at, fiddle with and admire.

For me, the "thrill of the hunt" in finding and buying something rare is better than ownership (but will admit I have quite a few that are not used but I would have trouble letting them go).

'cause there's always a story about everything you got, right? How you find it, where, how long it took you to find it... You let go of it, you loose awl that. Man, we're doomed...

If the answer to that is yes, then I collect socks

Random things that people put out for the trash and also cheap tools at yard sales.  :D

Meerschaum pipe?  Neat!   Is it a specific person or just a general figure?

I bought it in Kappadokia some years ago. The place is filled with geological wonders and medieval Byzantine heritage. Most pipes I found there had the shape of a Turk official, but you could also find shapes inspired from Natural History. I chose the Turk because of the related folklore.

Nice collections.

Here are a few photos of part of my coin collection. I focused mostly on local trade dollars because I found them interesting, local, and full of history. As such, I have the local Bon Soo dollars issues in the mid 70s, an Espanola trade dollar, a good assortment of Wawa trade dollars, a good assortment of Haweater dollars from Manitoulin Island, and quite a bit of stuff from Sudbury. All are Northern Ontario places.

A little Leatherman information.

I have me a few coins, ever wonder what those Rx bottles are good for, they fit quarters perfectly, I'm trying to get all the state quarters from both US mints..

I also have a bunch of other coins that the Mrs father collected before passing, but I didn't collect them..
