Amorphous April Multi-Plier Challenge - JOIN NOW !
Reply #180 on: April 06, 2017, 04:23:41 PM
Last Friday I was very tempted to pick a MP600 off of a Home Depot rack in exchange for $50.   Then join this challenge, but after reviewing the daily updates I am glad I did not follow that Impulse.
It seems that this challenge is truly an ordeal, a test of fortitude.  Starting with mods, to issues missing OH access.
Those that complete will be true heroes and deserving of the badge.
I will continue watching and will extend encouragement as I am able.
Carry on brave ones!

If I had my Vic Ranger as I normally do when I carry then I wouldn't be as lost LC :D it is a fine MT just different than what I am use to :tu: I will be fine with it all month but it is just sort of a shock to the system is all

It's not the ordeal some are making it out to be.  This 25 year old MP was my first non-SAK multitool, and was daily carried for a couple of years.  It was never out of service as I've always had it in my 3 day bag as a backup to whatever was currently on me, and I'm enjoying it as a retro everyday carry again.  I like that the plier head is magnetic from snapping it out and I like saving time by not having to unlock the tools before closing them.

Since I have been some of the doom and gloom  I do have to say I like the flicking them put and using these fine feeling pliers :tu: They feel very sturdy and I don't feel as though they are going to break on me :like: The knife blade is very easy to sharpen and hold an edge well  I can use the Phillips driver with my bit adapper so I have no problem with its stubbiness :D All in all this is a great MT and as with most all MTs it has pluses and minuses ;)

I am enjoying this challenge as it is making me do things differently than I normally would and that is always good for the mind :like: I am ready for the next 24 days  I seem more talkative in this thread and have more to say maybe since I am not as familiar with this tool as I have been in previous challenges with other tools :like: :like:

Day 6
25 years old, that may explain the variety of models!

You folks are now tempting me again...

I was getting confused as I know some guys who  swear by the mp6 they carry or have at arms reach daily.  One of my customers said it is the only tool he (her husband) uses, and she learned that after buying a Wave for Christmas some time ago and it still un open in his dresser.

I myself have been eyeballing some of the other models for a while  Like the Diesel and the Flik :dd: They look like fancier versions of the 600 to me :like:

Something I like about these challenge months is that they partner with the mt philosophy.
Or maybe it's a new zealand approach.
It may not be the best tool for the job but use what you've got and make it work.

Whether I liked the mt at the start or not, often by the end of the month I'll have grown fond of it.
After one has got you through 30 days of chores it can be difficult leaving it on the bench.

The point is being open to learning.
It's hard to discover new ways or new ideas if you think you already know everything.
Flipping it you can also increase your appreciation for your favourites after being forced to use lesser mts.

I find a mts ability to be customized a good thing.
Perhaps you'll never find the perfect mt.
Being able to take a mt that is close and improve on it is something that appeals to me.

I agree, and from the challenges I took part of, an appreciation of the tool was realized.
I also enjoy reviewing Challenge threads as I have found them the best review of the tool in real time.  I know that many are great at opening meal packets, yet other users share great insight and new uses as well.

Yet, reading the first five days of member experiences, this Ferber product seems to inflict pain and suffering unto its owner, totally opposite of product reviews on buy sites.

I want to learn, and to this point I have learned there are multiple versions of the MP6 and that modding this tool is easier than the LM and SOG products.

Yet unsure if the product is in my future for the slide head feature, but we will see .

had to change three screws of the Fridge at momma's as they were corroded (25+ years that old stubborn fridge has  :o) and the door panel wiggled. Those many magnets on there could very well weigh 5 or 6 pounds... ::)

When you love MTs generally - not only from a utilitarian perspective but for the sense of control and preparedness they can impart on daily living - then you also love even the ugly duckling in the flock.  The MP series is that duckling for me.  Relative to the competition, for me it falls short in almost every category.  I do not characterize the MP series as exhibiting excellence in design or engineering. Maybe deranged monkeys were screwing them together while they flung their feces at granny.  The design requires a series of unnecessary steps to deploy and stow the interior tools, and the tools themselves are not awesome.  But because we love MTs, we "love" the MP series too.  Maybe not objectively from a purely functional or utilitarian perspective, but because they can provide us with a small measure of control in a cold, cruel world.  Its that emotion that we all are seeking.

I love to completely hose down an MT with Boeshield T-9 until it is dripping wet, and then let it dry.  Its basically a light wax suspended in a solvent.  The solvent - which loosens and flushes out debris - evaporates, leaving behind a slight waxy coating that penetrates the pivots and provides a degree of corrosion protection. It makes the MT feel clean and smooth.

Day 7 of 30

Have used the knife blade to sharpen my pencil today, the awl to make a hole in top of a empty water bottle and then used the saw to cut a small board that I needed :tu: The other handle got in the way some when sawing but overall I got the job done and in a realitively timely manner

Nothing exciting here today.  No uses for the Gerber.

My son brought me a sandwich home from TGIFridays.  Called a Buffalo Wing Burger.  Those wings were toothpicked to the top of the burger, which was loaded with cheeses and sauces....Very good. Still trying to finish everything!

I think the MP would be more useful to me with a different blade. That Wharncliffe blade is not something I like.  I'd prefer a regular blade. Very hard to open as the nail nick is on the INSIDE!

The nail nick on my blade is outboard.
