JET-AER G-96 Lockback an old friend returned home
on: March 25, 2017, 11:27:02 PM
I bought this knife back in the early 1980's out of the back of some magazine. Back when you had to send in a check, wait for the check to clear and then wait some more for the knife to be mailed to you. I carried this knife until my dad bought me a proper Buck 112 for my 13th or 14th birthday.

It sat in a drawer for years until around 1999 when I moved home to Minnesota from Colorado. At the time my dad helped me venture out on my own being self employed as a Carpenter / Handyman. He would come and help me on jobs even although he was almost seventy. He needed a pocket knife so I gave him this one. Kind of a turning of tables since he had bought me my first few good knives. He loved this knife as it takes a great edge being good Japanese steel and rides well in the pocket. He carried it everyday until he passed away a few years later.

A few years went by and I decided to give it to my best friends son. I kind of forgot about it until recently when something reminded me of it. I was feeling kind of nostalgic for it a few weeks ago and casually mentioned to my friend how I had been thinking about it. I asked him if his son ever used it. He said that he didn't think so as he has a bunch of other knives now. I kind of left it at that.

Well I was over there today helping my friend out with his kitchen remodel and his son surprised me by handing me the knife saying that he would be happy for me to have it back. Well I have to say that I teared up a bit and thanked him for taking care of it for me.

Stories like this are what keeps me accumulating knives! Thanks for sharing a great story!
Personally I think Jet-Aer knives are greatly under-appreciated.People feel that they are just another Japanese knock off of a Buck 110 and worthless. I have about a dozen Jet-Aer G-96 knives including a couple of rare fixed blades and they are nothing but quality. What I like about them is that they do not feel handle heavy like the 110's.The only complaint I have(and this is with virtually all of this pattern knife including Buck)is the square edges on the handles. If you are going to use them frequently rounding the edges off is a must.

Thanks guys

Ray, I agree about the quality of this knife, it has great snap and solid lockup. I also think that the steel holds a great edge.

I'd love to see some pics of your knives  :tu:

What a great story.  I too remember the G-96 knives fondly. I had an electrician or tradesman type from them many years ago. Don't have a clue what could have happened to it.  Great collection Ray. I am in lust of the 3 on the right of your photo. I have a thing for rigging knives, but don't tell anyone. ;)

Thanks for the kind words Alan. are some close ups of the knives. I personally like the fixed blades even though they aren't really a practical carry knife. I have a few rigging (and rope)knives in my accumulation;I'll see if I can put a post together for you.

Another fan of G96 knives here,  :)

The G96 brand was imported into the US throughout the '70's and '80's by the American Jet Aer Corporation based in Patterson, New Jersey.
Knives were "based" on existing models by brands like Buck and Rigid, and they were sold through ads in well known outdoor magazines as a cheaper alternative for their A-brand counterparts.
The knives themselves were made in Japan, but in contrast to their lower price level the steel quality was actually very good: quite a few users reported that the knives performed better than the originals.

This is my G96 Polaris 5000, a lockback folder, possibly inspired by the Buck 500 model.
The factory edge was reasonably sharp but quite uneven, so i put on a new 30 degrees inclusive edge with my Wicked Edge sharpener.
The steel is both hard & wear resistent, and even though the blade is hollow ground, it took about 2 hours to get an even and hairwhittling edge.

Specs:

Length open: 18,7 cm
Length closed: 10,9 cm
Blade length: 8,0 cm
Blade thickness: max 3,0 mm (ricasso)
Steel: unknown stainless (ATS34 ?)
Handle material: Pakkawood & nickelsilver bolsters on brass liners
Locktype: Lockback
Weight: 157 grams
