Lets see your wood pile.
on: March 26, 2017, 04:43:34 PM
I know it might be an odd request.  I've seen a few of y'all post pictures of your wood piles and well I find them cool to look at.  I have a few clients that buy split wood for their fireplaces but nothing like I've seen here.  I'd imagine here in SoCal, at least my neck of it, many just buy a bundle of wood if they plan on lighting a fire.

I don't have a woodpile as I don't have a wood stove or fireplace, but I'll happily post a pic of my father's when I visit him next month.  Dad has several years' worth of wood built up.  He takes from one end of the pile one year, and the other end the next, and I swear the stuff in the middle has been ageing since he bought the place over 20 years ago!   :ahhh

Lol, where was this thread last month?
I split about 30m³ but most of it has been given away or packed into unphotogenic sheds.
It's pretty likely I'll have to do some more before winter sets in so I'll try to remember to get pics then.

This is what you get when you have a bloke raised in a large coastal city go up into the mountains and feel more at home  :D

I just love seeing all those huge piles of cut timber, whether stacked neatly or strew about.

Part of its also about a time when I lived in the mountains on a large parcel.  I was pretty young at the time but I remember the home being heated by wood.  The smell of the fireplace teleports me to that time.  The crunching of snow beneath my feet, the crisp cold air, my nose a bit runny, and coming in from the cold to sit by the fire entranced by the flames.

I have never heard of wood being counted by cubic meters before.  Around here it is always cords, which always struck me as the silliest form of measurement as it seems to create a fairly irregular pile.  A cord is 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet.  A cubic meter seems a lot easier to visualize than a cord.

We use cords here as well.  I agree cubic meters even for me seems easier to visualize.

Cords are stacked though yeah?
We're lazy around here and go by trailer size and what gets thrown into it.
So visualize a big pile of split wood, not a nice tidy stack.

I suppose that works too!

Measuring by the truckload seems even easier.  :D

You do know there are bigger axes than that, right?  :D

Most folks here would use a chainsaw or log splitter to cut that much wood.

I can smell the cut wood.  Last year or so Had a client that was moving.  She had a small stash of fire wood on the side of her house.  I asked her if I could take some with me camping she was more than happy to let it all go.  I wish now I could have taken it all.  It was about 2-3 feet high and about 6-8 feet across.  I just didn't have the space for it.  I did fill about 1/4 my truck tho and we had some amazing fires while camping.

I forgot that I actually do have a woodpile.... sort of.  This is the leftover firewood we had from our last camping trip.

Sorry for the blurriness- I ran out in my socks to take the pic and was trying not to step in squirrel poop...

I get mine from a local guy.  I fill a 1/4 of my bed for winter camping.  When we staying in a cabin we went thru quite a bit since we had a stove within the cabin.
