Back in January, when I had a week off,I took advantage of the break in the weather to do the last leg of the Hogsmill River, following it to its very source! Hope you enjoy :tu:

Tolworth field,no shortage of green!

It's amazing what you learn when you stop and read the signs. Turns out the remains of an ancient drove way runs through the fields!

On onto the river

Not the first time we've been here, where the Bonesmill branches off from the Hogsmill

Here's what always brings joy to my heart: the open road ahead!

The bridge at Ruxley Lane isn't over exciting, but there's been a crossing at this point for hundreds of years.

Now,this bridge is a bit more interesting. This is Packhorse Bridge at the Ewell Court park. This is the last visible remain of the gunpowder mills that once supplied powder for the Naploenic and American Civil wars. It would have been nice if there was a wee bit more history told there

Judging by the different styles of brickwork,I'm guessing there's been a fair bit of rebuilding over the years

The ornamental lake was a bit of a hidden surprise. Very scenic, and if it weren't for the 50 billionty family's with small kiddies it would have been very relaxing to visit. I wonder if the terrapins can be trained to catch kids?

Ewell Court house. To be honest, until I'd googled this
http://www.epsomandewellhistoryexplorer.org.uk/EwellCourtHouse.html
I couldn't have told you much about it. Click the link,it's worth a look :tu:

Little know fact:Ewell Court Park is home to the giant metal dragonfly species!

And yes! These are the SteppingStones!

At this point,a very nice lady was giving me chocolate drops to feed to her slightly deranged Yorkie (the dog,not the bigger chocolate :twak:). Strange things happen to me on these rambles...

The Stepping Stones are look a lot nicer on a sunny Summer's day...

Both the path, and the river pass under the railway embankment here. At 5'4, it's nice to have an obstacle even I have to duck to get under :D This is the line from Waterloo to Ewell West

And this is it,the last stretch!

Around here there's still old mill races, which were used up until fairly recently to run paper mills like this

And this is it! The source of the Hogsmill!

My kid has been really interested in rocks lately.
There was a double up on book orders and she was given the extra mini encyclopedia on rocks and fossils.
She has since put together a small fossil hunting kit which she takes everywhere.

The Hogsmill is fed by a spring slap bang in the middle of Ewell
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ewell

Ewell us a spring line settlement(yes,I learnt that from the Wiki page) but it did explain the large number of springs in the locality(one or two of which I might get to visit over the coming months).

For those interested in the geology and ground water
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_line_settlement
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Basin

This is the entrance to Bourne Hall. Rather classy, don't you think?

St Mary the Virgin
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Mary%27s_Church,_Ewell
I made a hash of getting photos of St Mary's,and it's original tower. I'll update the thread in the future with some decent pics. Given the long history of worship at the spring,I do wonder if the history of the site of St Mary's doesn't go back much further than the 13th century.

On a further note, there's another St Mary the Virgin at Chessington, not far from Castle Hill which we visited in the Thames-Down Link rambles, which dates to a similar period. There'll be pics in a future thread. If anyone has any insight on why the early western church dedicated particular locations to particular saints, could you post a link,or drop me a PM?

As with every town and village in Britain and Northern Ireland, there's a reminder of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice
