Ferro Rod Handles
on: March 30, 2017, 04:23:00 PM
I have 2 large ferro rods arriving in the next week which should last me for years. They are 5" long x 1/2" thick so want to put some really nice handles on them. I don't have any antler or anything at the mo but have found a nice site to buy from at what I thought were very reasonable prices.

I was thinking of antler for one and something a bit more exotic for the other like water buffalo horn, mainly because I have walking sticks with these materials for handles and they are really hard wearing and also look good.

Has anyone worked with these materials? If so can they be shaped easily enough with a dremel or will I need to break out the belt sander to rough them to shape then polish with the dremel? Are there any particular precautions to take other than a dust mask?

It should work fairly well with a dremel. It should be noted that I usually find it a bit difficult to get nice, even, surfaces with a Dremel so I would probably finish it by hand. Another point to make is that you'll need a way to drill a 1/2" hole, preferably a drill press but I guess a hand held would work as well. Third thing is that you'll not be popular with family if you do any work that generates heat on horn indoors. The smell is just the same as that of burnt hair, not pleasant.

Thanks for that, a job for outside on a nice day then.

I've got a drill press in my garage so I'm good for the hole and getting it nice and square.  I take it I can use a standard epoxy to glue them in the hole?

I would guess epoxy would work fine, might be an idea to roughen up the rod a little or even file a couple of notches in it to make sure the glue has anything to hold on to.

Kev, find some local wood that you like and try that as well.  Horn will be awesome for sure, I'm always hoping I'll find some while out.  If I'm not mistaking Mags was looking at some dog antler chew toys to try to make scales from.  Might be a good way to go.

I've made a new handle for my smaller ferro rod again out of Red Cedar.  I'm really a sucker for the smell and I can always use wood for fire.

Looking forward to seeing how these turn out
As the Guys have said horn smells bad when you work it with power tools
An old plastic imitation horn handle at the back  ;)

Thanks Kevin,   :salute:
The wood ones are easy to do, drill a hole in a nice block of wood and araldite in a fero rod,
then hold the rod in a drill and 'turn' the wood block down using files and sand paper or a belt sander  ;)

That method would work for a horn one to if I use one of these blanks ... http://www.english-handmade-knives.co.uk/acatalog/info-1649.html

Top tip there, thanks  :tu:

It should work well  :tu:
The two I did with metal discs are two pence pieces,
I found only the older coins are copper also if they get too hot when you are shaping them the glue releases  :ahhh

Good luck

You owe it to yourself to drill a hole in a ferro rod at least once in your life  >:D   >:D

I'll try it on high speed with no lube and see if I can make fire  :D

Look what I found in the stores today. I'm thinking a ready made ferro rod handle for one of my 6" ferro rods. Well almost, cut down, shaped, fine sanded and linseed oiled, one of them will be.

small file handles

Nice find.  You can also highly scorch them as well although I do like linseed oil on wood.

I got home this evening and fancied a little project
Piece of walnut, drilled a hole (not very straight  ::) )

Mount it in a turny thing and attack it with files

Then attack it with sandpaper

Then mark some lines with a hacksaw

Then rub in some linseed oil

Then part off with said hacksaw

Then insert drill where fero rod will go,
Handle will rest on it's flat side that you thought was a mistake earlier  :D

Thanks

Just held my hacksaw to it while it was spinning  ;)
I've seen videos of guys using copper wire to 'score' the wood while it is spinning, that burns black lines  :tu:

The handle  of mine came off. I plan to just drill  a hole in it and tie a lanyard with paracord or a boot lace or something. The handle that came with it was just a point of failure and I want to eliminate that
