I have 2 large ferro rods arriving in the next week which should last me for years. They are 5" long x 1/2" thick so want to put some really nice handles on them. I don't have any antler or anything at the mo but have found a nice site to buy from at what I thought were very reasonable prices.I was thinking of antler for one and something a bit more exotic for the other like water buffalo horn, mainly because I have walking sticks with these materials for handles and they are really hard wearing and also look good. Has anyone worked with these materials? If so can they be shaped easily enough with a dremel or will I need to break out the belt sander to rough them to shape then polish with the dremel? Are there any particular precautions to take other than a dust mask?
Thanks Kevin, The wood ones are easy to do, drill a hole in a nice block of wood and araldite in a fero rod, then hold the rod in a drill and 'turn' the wood block down using files and sand paper or a belt sander
roughen up the rod a little or even file a couple of notches in it to make sure the glue has anything to hold on to
