Unlocking your Spirit
on: April 02, 2017, 08:57:27 PM
I may have mooted this before, but has anyone removed the locking mechanism from their Spirit, and if so, what did/do you think of it?

While I'm lucky that I work in a place where I can EDC my Spirit for odd jobs etc, I'd really like to carry it around more than I do.

For those Pioneers who have courageously tried this, how easy are the clips to remove and put back again, and do the tools retain enough tension once open to still be useful.

Thanks for any answers peeps.  :salute:

I haven't tried it but I doubt the individual spings alone are enough to keep the tools open securely. I say this judging by how easily the tools fold back in and considering that the locking tab lies agaist all the spings together to do its job.

I understand why you're considering this mutilation but I wouldn't do it if I were you. Plus, I have a feeling that little piece of folded metal must be a little snug in there. Maybe others with more experience will chime in.

Which reminds me...

Maybe if you could grind the notch on the main blade to keep it from locking, while leaving the rest, it would pass inspection and still be functional. If it's a butter blade, the lock feature doesn't make it any more lethal anyway, that only applies to pokey blades. It's a silly smurfing law for certain, and I mean smurfing with a capital F.  :D

Not to get into the tool vs. weapon debate, but the Spirit is definitively a tool, but I suppose weapons are too, sort of.  :ahhh

And yes I opened that can of worms with a Vic can opener.  :D

Hey Mags, if you open up all the tools on one handle, there is a small spring which engages the lock... tried taking it out?

That would be my first thought too - take out the spring and see how the tools feel.  Don't lose it. :ahhh

Thanks firiki - someone is reading the OP at least  :D

I will probably try and remove one spring to see what happens. Then, if the results compromise the Spirit too much I'll pop it back in. I just wondered if anyone else had tried this before.

Thanks for your answers all.  :salute:

I suppose so... hahaha

Firiki, technically, the spring is just part of the locking mechanism...

Right - I've hit a snag:

The spring can be levered out so far, but the anchor point doesn't have any head room to be prised out of it's housing.

No that means you've given up your soul and wallet to sharp pointy stuff.

If you checked the insurance box, you'll wake up with pain in your lower back and a nasty headache.

Just tried opening and closing a tool while holding the slide lock in unlock position.

There is still some tension. Although this will render all of the tools prone to closing on your fingers.

But you've got us!
And no pain in your lower back! Which is worth quite something if you ask me :dd:

That second thing to be clear.

Seriously though, have you tried blocking the spring using something that you push in between?
That way, when checked, you'll have a non locking tool, but a locking one as soon as you remove the blockage.
