Before I drove back home, I took the opportunity to visit the Cabela's store in Huntsville. Pretty awesome store and tons of cool stuff. Unfortunately I pretty much own all the MT models they were selling.  :-\
They did have an Opinel "N'12 Explore". Hadn't seen one yet, so I had to get one. :)

I am seeing why some people have the 12. Very nice blade shape and feels very robust.

I've got a standard 12, bought it because the complete opposite in the Opinel lineup, the 2 didn't have the closing friction I wanted (and no lock).  For a general camping/outdoor knife I don't think one can do much better, aside from the Explore, which is Sandvik stainless and has a firestarter and gut hook.

Thanks, Cody!
I've really enjoyed the Explore the few times I carried it. The blade grind is really really attractive as well. My Explore is a bit too stiff, but I know that will ease up with time.

I had no idea it used Sanvik, so thank you for the info.

It seems to be Opinel's foray into multitools. The hook is well ground,  the fire starter is thick and hides well. The whistle isn't great, but in a survival situation, it may be useful. The color scheme makes it really hard to lose as well.  :)

Edit:
Spartan, that is very nice.  :like:
I need to get an Opinel with that color scheme.

I'm in!
Also included the Douk Douk and Mercator as I view them as the same vein. Lower cost, great performers, and lots of history.  If I ever start a true collection it will be one of these.

Now time to sift through this great thread.

Anka.

The 6 gets used bumming around the house.  The 8 slim is in the backpack and handles food duty.  The 8 is part of my EDC rotation.  The 8 outdoor joins me when I have to work offshore.

Can't pick one!
