It holds your hand in place so you can cut off your own fingers with convenience never seen before?  ???

Naw, it's a full hand guard, and in trench knives they're used as knuckles. The real ones also had a stud on the bottom for penetrating thick material too, or something like that...
Got those frog legs.

The real ones also had a stud on the bottom for penetrating thick material too, or something like that...
It was a skull crushing pommel :)
