Import of folding knives into Australia
on: April 12, 2017, 12:58:58 PM
Where does the law stand now?
I can't find a "folding knives" category at the "Can I bring it back" page
https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Brin/Can-I-bring-it-back

I remember them being allowed, except for automatic and assisted blades.
Has anyone ordered stuff that was successfully imported with no issues?

I looked into this a little while back RP.

Do you mean non-SAK folders?
If SAKs - I have imported dozens in the last few years - Including the OHO 130mm Wengers - which potentially could be confiscated as being nearly gravity opening (ie Spydie Flick). But I never had any problems. A couple of time packages have been opened by customs - but everything was always passed.

When I last checked the NSW law - It says collecting and displaying knives is OK - It's just carrying them, in public & without good cause, where you have a potetial problem. And of course knife shops (eg King of Knives) - Have some pretty gruesome fixed blades always on sale. Which, BTW, I never quite understood - ie you can buy/sell etc - But you can't carry!!

So if your folder is for collecting purposes, or a SAK, you should be OK

Yeah, I've imported many SAKs with no issues. And MTs with OHO blades, no problem.
I'm just worried about ordering folders, only to have them confiscated but custom officers who do not know what they're doing.

The Sanrenmu 6040 is only $10, so I might risk it and order one, just to experiment.

That's a bit old to rely on.

Although unlikely they would have changed the legislation after only 15 months.
What you could also do is look up those docs in the .gov.au website and see if there have been amendements

And this could explain why PTRSAK got some OHO saks confiscated and mine got through as his were a lot earlier
Although I am pretty sure mine were before 2015  :o

Well, the absence of folding knives from the "Can I bring it back" page should be enough to go on. The "Automatic knives" category only mentioned automatic and assisted, the "multitools" category only mentioned MTs. So I assume it is legal to import a normal folding knife. I just hope custom officers know and enforce that as well.
