Lets see your Scout and Camping knives!!!!
on: April 13, 2017, 05:55:49 PM
Any traditional knives, fixed or folding, that you can take (or have taken) camping. BSA Scout type knives and bigger camp knives, are ok too.         Please keep it in a traditional, nostalgic vein.

I'll start with some traditional Scouts....

Case

Western

Remington R-4 Camp

A. G. Russell

And Dad cut up many "taters and onions" for the big cast iron skillet at the deer camp with his Old Timer...

Warner Moran, Rio Grande Camp Bowie

So whether you whittle pine with a Camillus by the fire, Open a can of peaches with a Camp King,  use an Opinel to cut up carrots, slice sausage with an Ol' Hickory or use a heavy bladed Bowie to clear the campsite....show us your camp knives!

gotta love a country where that Warner Moran is considered a scout knife

I have time for a quickie pic.
The scout knife on the left is the one that got & still gets used, it shows on the can opener more than the blade.
There was the ever present stockman, a go anywhere do it all knife.
An old pic of the Navy mark 1.
I have an old camp hatchet but no pic of it.
So basically back when my camping was more primative, a scout knife, stockman, navy and hatchet.

Some neat looking items!

Top is an old Boker that my Dad picked up in Germany when he was stationed there right after WWII, and carried as part of his flight equipment for the next 50 years.

A couple of old Imperials that I used in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in the 50's and 60's.

An assortment of Scout-type knives, including two Remingtons, a Case (with pliers), and a Camillus Boy Scout Deluxe with phillips.

An old Western sheath knife, made in Boulder. Picked it up when I moved out here in 1965. My first decent sheath knife. Not an official Scout knife, but used in scouting, and other camping and fishing trips.

The True Temper hatchet ( in the middle) replaced a cheap piece of flat stamped metal. It also saw use in scouting, camping, etc.; and now is part of the emergency kit in the car trunk.

Very very nice!    :like:

BTW what're the backsprings like on those Remingtons? I've got an R4243from that era and while the knife itself is awesome the pull/snap is pretty weak.

These are ok. About a 5-6+ on pull on various layers but good snap. One of the R-4's spring on the saw layer could be snappier (prob a 4) but on the saw it's fine. I'm not unhappy with them.  The Trailhand is a touch snappier than the R-4's.
