So I had a beat up SAK that had a lot of oxidation, rust, tip of the main blade broken off etc etc

I knew I'd never carry it and few would have any interest in buying the thing.
So why not tear it apart and make something work/school (same for me) friendly?
Remove blade, corkscrew etc and, pretty much, just leave the can/bottle openers, scissors, maybe the awl, and maybe the saw.

I do not have a drill press, so cordless drill had to do.
Wasnt as easy as I'd hoped.

And then, not thinking, I didnt pay attention to the layers and what went with what.

That's where I need the biggest help
Could anyone post pics of the individual tools and what backspring goes with them?
What about the middle layers?

Next, since im ditching the corkscrew, the scales wont work for me...or they'll look out of place - where to buy new, plain scales?
What to do about the pins and the little washers that went around them?

Sorry, its slightly overwhelming.

Last night I worked more on this.
Been taking my dremel with the polishing compound and cleaning everything up.
Took 4 brad nails and nailed in a 'guide' onto a cedar 2x4 I had laying around. THat way it'd be easy to stack this stuff up as I was figuring it out.

help needed...Badly.

I was reading another thread this morning and saw these posts.

Start on the backside with the corkscrew side facing up... drill the holes using 2.5mm and 2.2mm drill bits respectively... gently loosen and remove to bushing for later use...

I use nail punches to tap out the pins slowly... do this layer per layer so that it will be easy to lay out all the parts... easier this way to remember which goes where... that's how I took this pic

Find your pin stock?

Yes I did :tu: but I haven't worked on the knife any so other than that nothing to report :salute: :D

I got it at the SMKW but it is 3/32 vs. 2.5 mm and I read on here that it was very close in size so I am going to find out for myself ;) :tu:

Replacement scales can be bought from here -> https://store.multitool.org/

How bad are the bushings? Can they not be reused?

Reread and realized you're after no cutout scales, I want some too, no idea where to find those sorry.

I made a no corkscrew sak yesterday but don't have pics of it up just yet.

Making custom scales would also solve your lack of bushings problem.

Washers aka bushings.

It's those round ring like thingos on 3 of the 4 pins...

Did you drill the pins or just grinded them?

Yeah those got trashed.
I didnt do any sort of research when I started disassembly and those washers/bushings were messed up

Where do I buy new?

I drilled, but in the process they were destroyed. Used a cordless drill, not a drillpress

It's not a complete failure as long as you learn from it.

Luckely you didn't try this on a brand new one!

Just don't give up :salute: It may be frustrating but none of it is a big of a deal as you might think ;)

I agree about making custom scales and wood would be an easy medium to start with :tu:

To bad about the bushings  :-\ You can use a regular drill and still be able to save them but you just have to take your time :ahhh I did this with mine and was worried that I might mess them up as well but I just went slowly and they came out fine :like: I did start with a bigger bit that was just small enough to not get the outer ring of the bushing then stopped and changed to a smaller bit for the rest

Good luck and hopefully happy modding :D :like: :like:

Ask nicely, maybe a modder state side will donate a few.

Or just peen the pins and then glue on some scales.

Or make some custom scales and peen them on.

You can't just buy them cause Vic prob doesn't want us taking them apart in the first place

Stuff happens like this to everyone so don't sweat it to much  :tu: Hope you can source some pretty easy

You said school right? Do you have a shop there? You can make those bushings but not the same as the original.

Im a teacher, so I wanted something blade-less for work, which is at a school.

Unfortunately there is no metal shop, only welding.

Is there a wood shop? If there is a lathe with a carriage, and a carbide cutting bit, it could do the job, since brass is so soft. You'll just have to turn the speed down very slow.

Although if you do have access to a wood shop, going custom wood scales with exposed pins is the way to go. Another alternative would be to get scales custom made, perhaps through Shapeways, and do exposed pins that way. There is no "official" source for 91mm scales without the cutout, so custom made is really your only option.

This picture, courtesy of GigaHz should be helpful:

The only discrepancys you might see is that the metal file in the above pic has a backside tool; most metal files (such as the one in the Mountaineer) do not, and have a backspring that looks similar to the woodsaw springs. There are also some models that have backside tools on the woodsaw, which would give you a backspring similar to the metal file's spring above. Finally, older scissor models do not have a backside hook, producing a spring shaped similar to the woodsaw's, but thicker.

Keep in mind that certain liners have to go next to certain tools (although if you have few enough layers, those should be fairly easy to figure out)

Picturtes of what you have (perhaps with numbers by the tools & springs) would allow us to identify which tool goes to which spring for you.

Good luck!

Ah. Too bad. For the blade  you can blunt the edge or reprofile the blade to a pry bar. Good luck!
