Is there any order or logic to BSA SAKs?
on: April 17, 2017, 09:31:00 AM
Ive just won a BSA scaled Tinker on fleabay. At this point I'm not sure yet if it's 84 or 91mm,although I'm not over bothered either way ;)

But,I was wondering...

I've seen a large number of BSA SAKs,some Wenger, some Victorinox. There's the old chestnut of BSA Explorers being called Yeomans. Is there any particular logic involved in BSA SAKs? Do the Boy Scouts of America spec certain models on certain years? Do the manufacturers just licence the brand for a period and choose what they want to put the brand on? Is there a list of BSA models v years? Will I run out of questions?
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

I've no idea what the answers are to any of those questions, but I'd be interested to hear them as well.  :tu:

If it makes you feel any better, that's what I thought the first time I saw the name. After all,if there's Ducati SAKs,why not Beezers?

BSA licenses the symbol on a bunch of "Scouty" type things and has for years...probably to target a certain market, to lend credence to a model suited for scouting (ensuring a minimum level of quality/dependability), to make money and as to create a keepsake of the "Scouting Experience". I've seen it on knives, compasses, sharpening stones and other camping items.

And, although I've seen dealers call them Yeomans, the BSA Yeoman and BSA Explorer are two different models.

Have a look at the sakwiki yeoman page... there is a link on the yeoman conspiracy which explains the BSA Yeoman and BSA Explorer confusion...

Thx for that info J-Man!!

Here's the info and link:

"It has been speculated that the Yeoman was a US only model, probably on the request of the distributor Swiss Army Brands.

The distributor Swiss Army Brands is largely considered responsible for confusion around this model. After the model was discontinued it appears they substituted models, or shipped, BSA Explorers under the BSA Yeoman name. Old incorrect photos of the BSA Yeoman are often used in advertising for the BSA Explorer. Several problems on dealer websites and ebay with the naming and photos has no doubt caused some grievance, not to mention incorrect purchases."

Most of the old BSA knives (made by several manufacturers) were essentially Riffs on the SAK Pioneer/old soldier or the US Military Demo Knife. Nowadays, they slap it onto things randomly.

Like most every one else, if you pay them enough money the Scouts will let you put their logo on almost any thing. Which is why the Scout logo now shows up on decent knives like Victorinox and Buck, and on Chinese junk.

Some other odds-and-ends:

The Scout Huntsman is actually a Fieldmaster, with phillips sd.

The official US Scout knives are Victorinox. At one time however you couldn't buy one at Philmont Scout Ranch. They had their own line of specially marked Wenger scout knives.

At one time 3 or 4 Wengers were official US Scout knives. However they used model names different from the regular Wenger line (still haven't reliably figured out what is what.).

While most US knives are Vics, most Canadian scout knives are (were) Wengers.

World Scout knives were specially colored (purple) Wengers, but most national scouting organizations went with standard red Vics.

1. An assortment of Philmont Wenger knives.

2. World Scout knives.

3. Various European Scout knives; Switzerland, Netherlands, Hungary and an EvoWood from Norway.

4. Canadian Scout knives, mainly Wengers with one Vic.

Here's my only Scout knife.  A Wenger Evo S11 produced to mark 100 years of Scouting.

Well,my BSA Tinker arrived today. It is a 91mm,and much to my delight,it has a can key Phillips. Interestingly,it also has a half stop cap lifter. If I'm right that patern Phillips was discontinued in '85;and the half stop lifter was introduced in '85 too?

Anyway, here's the little guy, after some TLC.

Cheers, yeah! I'd had hopes about the Phillips, but couldn't tell for sure from the sellers photos. The fact that it is transitional is that much cooler :D
