We already got hiding quoted pictures by default (Thank you!), could we get the same for nested quoting? I.e. something like the spoiler alerts? In other words:

Current:

Quote
quoted text
Quote
this is the nested quote
more quoted text

Suggestion:

Quote
quoted text
Show content
Quote
this is the nested quote

more quoted text

Though obviously marking the folded content as older quotes, not general spoilers. I think it would improve the readability of many threads, with few disadvantages.

I could get behind this.  :tu:
Those mile-long posts of quotes in quotes are funny up to a point, but scrolling slows down a bit.

First off- cool new avatar RP!

I will talk to Whoey and see if this is something that can be done.  It's not something I ever considered before, but we can certainly look into it.   :tu:

Thanks.  :)

And thanks. It's not something that I come across often, but it would definitely help with scrolling.

Unnecessary and excessive quoting has been discussed here before.

First reply to a thread with lots of pics quoting the opening post including all the pics I'm not ok with.

Quotes of url tagged pics don't auto hide, it only takes a second to remove the tags but only a few bother to do so.

I am one of the few  ;)  :D  :tu:     (......unless the pic really needs to be there to explain something)
I wish we all did it.

We could also all manually implement Steiner's sugestion - which is also a good idea - or just quote the latest post in the chain

And/or one can also quote selectively - ie just the point from the earlier post that is relevant to your response ..... like what I did above  ;)
Although I did this once and someone got very upset with me - as he thought I had taken his quote out of context  :(

- Oh and I also usually remove icons from quotes - also to save length and improve readability.  :salute:

I never remove part of the tags :oops: I know when I first started with Flickr I tried and it never came out right (always mess it up and have to redo a few times even sometimes) so I was frustrated and decided to quit doing it :facepalm: Never paid much attention that it was a problem :shrug: I am usually on my phone when I post pics and the copy paste is a bit more involved than with my desktop ::) I will at least try to do that when I am on my desktop but no promises as I am absent minded sometimes :facepalm:

It's not a bad idea. I did some quick searching and there is no implementation of that in SMF at the moment. This means I'd be doing it from scratch, probably using the general example (spoiler hiding) as a starting point. I really have too many things on my plate at the moment to do it, if it was an existing mod for SMF I could install it and move on, but that's not the case.

Of course we could turn the nested quote limits on but that would ruin some peoples fun as mentioned. I encourage you to edit quotes to the essentials, and maybe we can implement this at some future point.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

This is something I had noticed before joining this lovely forum and sometimes it would be tough to navigate longer threads.  This problem can be solved (per machine) via user style sheets using a plugin like Stylus (Chrome or Firefox).  Here's a gif of how I have mine set:
imgur link
It's set to minimize both quotes and signatures and expand on hover.  I'm sure it could be adjusted to keep the first level quote maximized and only hide deeper quotes if you wanted.  The issue is that this is per computer and mobile devices usually don't support add-ons or plug-ins, so it would only be helpful on desktop/laptop.

The instructions if anyone is interested in doing this:
Show content
1. Download Stylus for your browser (Chrome or Firefox)
2. Click the Stylus button (kind of a teal S) when at MT.o and it will say "Write style for" and click on multitool.org.
3. Copy and paste the below code into the new tab that opens.
4. Hit Save on the left.
5. That's it!  Changes should be live and now you can focus on the meat of the content while still being able to access the extra stuff easily.

Code:
Code: [Select]
.post {
    padding-top: 0;
    margin-top: 0;
}

 .roundavatar_full > img {
    max-height: 48px;
}

.description_board::before {
    content: "[hover for signature]";
}

.description_board, blockquote {
    height: 12px;
    width: 30% !important;
    overflow: hidden;
}

.description_board:hover, blockquote:hover {
    height: 100%;
    width: 100% !important;
}

As far as something server side on the website itself that would affect everyone, I would be willing to look into making a plugin for SMF.  It appears the spoilers aren't native to SMF and there's a plugin being used so it might be slightly harder to integrate it properly.  Could maybe reimplement a different button that shows/hides content, or change the JS/CSS that is served. If anyone with knowledge of the current system and/or general web development has thoughts on the best way to implement, I'm not scared of PHP.

Alternative code just to eliminate nested quotes:

Code: [Select]
.post blockquote .quoteheader, .post blockquote blockquote { display: none; }
