De-waved my ZT620!
on: April 23, 2017, 08:20:29 PM
Love this knife but really couldn't stand the wave feature.  Finally worked up the nerve to do something about it and reached for the dremel.   It's not perfect looking but functionally I got what I wanted.

What do you have against the thumb disk?  I'm pretty impartial.  Don't see much difference between it and a thumbstud.

That came out really nice.  I was expecting to see some type of mangling.

I don't really like thumb studs all that much either. I just don't like the feel of deploying the knife with a disc as well as how it grabs the pocket when pulling the knife out. Just personal preference.

That's a neat job, well done  :salute:

A buddy and myself had this conversation (again) last weekend, I know it takes practice but I haven't managed to make the wave work for me.

I want something quick-deploying, but the wave is not it.

My buddy on the other hand, first time every time, he's a fan.

I was out of touch with what happened with knives for about two decades.......I recoiled in horror the first time I saw a thumb disc

Thanks for the remarks.  I just didn't like how the knife would start to open part way out of my pocket with the wave.  Seemed like it was only a matter of time before I cut myself.   Now I can actually give it some pocket time.

I'll bet a million ZT enthusiasts are emailing Kai and demanding they blacklist you for doing that!

I think it looks pretty sweet though- I'm not sure I have ever seen anyone remove a Wave- years ago the in thing was to cut open thumbholes like the ones found on One Hand Trekkers and Spyderco models to make a Wave.  But then, folks back then were also find of using the Wave as a bottle opener too, but I haven't heard of anyone doing that for a long while.

Great job though- are you going to try and blacken the exposed metal or just leave it?

Thanks Def!  I know the Emerson fanatics will be out for blood if they see this thread :)

I may try to blacken the bare metal.  Wasn't sure of a way to do it and have it look half decent.  Any ideas?

Graphite spray will blacken it. I have used it successfully on my MP600 Saw mod

I do have a couple, although I am not sure how good they will be so consider yourself warned.

The easy way might be to just color it with a Sharpie.  That probably isn't a fantastic idea, but if no one looks closely it might hide the bare spot a little.

The next idea I had was some black nail polish, but that is usually a high gloss, and while it might be a similar color it might make it more obvious since it would be a shiny spot.  Of course, you could carefully do the entire spine and make it look very cool, like it is supposed to look like that.  It would sort of look like ghost flames on a car- subtle but striking.

Failing that, you could try some flat paint like rocker panel paint from the automotive store.  It might match well enough that it isn't obvious.

You could also try going entirely the other way and stripping all of the black off the blade, but that might be even more upsetting to the ZT people.

Like I said, not a lot of good options, but those are all the thoughts I have.

Believe it or not, graphite spray was my first thought, but I forgot to mention it while I was typing out the other ideas....

Thanks for the ideas.  Now that you mention it I might try nail polish but make it stand out with some red or bright green.  You know, for the ZT folks...
