My newest SAK's - just some ramblings
on: October 10, 2008, 08:04:57 AM
First, a big thanks to Tim for another easy transaction and lightning fast shipping.

My 1989 Soldier came today, which is special for me because that is my birth year. Despite being a "used" knife, the thing is in excellent condition. It's great to have a Vic with a hollow rivet, now I just have to decide what kind of lanyard I want. The implements are also DAK style - sharp cut and without the "standard" high polish Vic finish. Yet, again, I like that, as I've been wanting to try these type out and see if they slip less. One question: is it normal for SAK's of this vintage to have the rough drivers, or did they use leftover DAK blades?

Along with that was a GAK. Initial impression: what an awesome knife. Again, this thing is freaky-factory-sharp. The serrations also don't bother me as much as I thought they might. The knife is sooooo sharp that the serrations really do help the knife cut faster. Instead of "sawing" like most serrated knives, they work more like the serrations on a food prep knife, they work with more of a slice than a tear. The locking driver blade is a big plus. The thing has a nice heft and feels good in the hand. After handling the GAK, I can't wait to see the new Soldier. I am really impressed.

Recently I have also acquired:

A Silvertech Spartan. It's a pretty knife, in a classic pattern. I plan on making this my "dress knife".

A Stayglow Climber: This knife has rightly earned it's praise. It's in my EDC line up.

Old GAK: Mine has seen some use, but I like this pattern and need a good chance to give it some real backwoods field usage. I'd like to find one in nicer condition to make this one a beater.

Nice purchases!

Yes, hollow rivets are great. I wonder why Vic stopped using them? That's why I hope the Wenger SI stays in production, though it doesn't seem likely...

The Silvertech scales are just as thick as any cellidor model, so I'm sure they will be fine. I'm sure they will scratch and cloud with use, thus my intent to keep it a "dressy" knife. Or, if I do carry it, keep it away from the pocket change. Actually, my biggest concern is wether or not the T&T will wear off the interior silver coating over time.

Congrats on your new toys..tools. A Sack-up will help keep those silver-tech scales  pristine for some time to come. I seem to recall that the tools on older Soldiers weren't as polished as the more recent production, but I don't think they were as unpolished as DAK knives.

I seem to remember reading (or did I dream it?) that the hollow rivet was there so as the knife could be strung up and used as a plumb line.  This was to help set-up of a man portable weapon system.  When the weapon system went out of use so did the hollow rivet.

All this could well be completely untrue or just a product of a vivid dream on my part.    :ahhh

Nope, it wasn't an hallucination. I think Spork said that not too long ago...

Actually SwissBianco (spelling) had some pages from an Swiss Army manual showing the Soldier being used as a plumb bob.  If I could just remember where I saw that.     :D

So I was doing some more comparing. The implements on the  89 Soldier are noticeably thicker than my 06 Soldier. Sweet.

Have you used a caliper on them?  The rounded, polished corners of the newer Soldiers and Pioneers make them look thinner compared to the old unpolished ones.
