Multi-tools used in Survivorman
on: April 28, 2017, 02:51:11 PM
Hello again.  :D

I thought I'd have a look at this series too. Not many River Monsters episodes to come, and I've covered many already. I'm not done with it, but in the meantime, I'll check Survivorman. I had never seen this, not a single one. But having finished the first episode, I have a nice feeling about it.

Les Stroud and multi-tool did not go together all that well in my mind, if you know what I mean. Still, it is an interesting show, and playing "spot the MT" makes it even better.

1x01 - Canadian Boreal Forest

Swiss Army Knife. Probably a Huntsman? I think 4 layers, and it has a saw and a corkscrew.

Starting off with the kit: Some cashews, some beef jerky, one match, and the sak.

Making divots.

Sawed the notch.

Sawing cedar bark to look for maggots.

Sawing small branches.

Preparing a figure-four trap.

Cutting roots for dinner (no maggots).

1x02 - Arizona Desert

OG Wave in this one.

Salvaging parts from the bike.

Making divots.

Cutting sting off scorpion.

Pulling off cactus fruits.

Sharpening spokes for a spear. No close-ups, but I thought I'd include the use.

Clamping the spokes of a rod.

And some cactus for lunch.

Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

Yeah, I just started, so it's all fresh to me. I liked the first two episodes.
I always expect Jeremy Wade to join in the narration, but Les is a great host too.

Thanks.  :)
I figured I might as well see Survivorman. It's not difficult to spot the MT like in River Monsters. It's more like "screen-grab the clearest frame".

1x03 - Costa Rica

OG Wave again.

Showing it.

Cutting coconut.

Cutting palm tree branches for shelter.

Panning over everything available. Wave at top, scooby underpants in spotlight.

Cutting underpants to use rubber band. Sorry scooby.

Filing point and notches for spear.

It worked!

Opening Wave to cut vine. That's what you get for having no camera crew. No close-ups.

1x04 - Georgian Swamp

Huntsman again.
Cutting vines.

Sawing small branches.

Sharpening spears.

About to get dinner.

Sawing again.

Turtle's legs for dinner.

Took the scissors out to cut a credit card into a shape.

And used the awl to punch holes through it.

It was supposed to attract fish.

I like that you show all the uses/tasks of the MTs in the series  :tu:
I will be a good thread for future references of what was done or used in Survivorman  :multi:

That was my idea. Unlike River Monsters, there's a tool in every episode, and it gets used a lot.
I'll try and post pics for everything, I hope he upgrades his camera for future seasons. :D

1x05 - Canadian Arctic

SwissTool in this one.

Salvaging parts off the snowmobile.

He cut off some foam from the seat and soaked it with gasoline.

Just showing it. I love it when they do that!  :tu:

Cutting some wires for a mask.

Cutting raw seal meat. yum.

He made a crude shovel from the snowmobile's windshield, to be able to cut out snow bricks for an igloo.

More like a parang.  :D

Preparing kindling.

He took apart bullets for the powder.

He also removed the point of one, pressed the rim to make the opening smaller, and filed it a bit, loaded it, and fired it at the kindling, and it worked (after a few tries).
I have never seen this done before. Cool.  :tu:

1x06 - Mountain

Swisstool again. Showing it. Kind of.

Salvaging the extra camera tripod (the camera he carried as part of the scenario, not one he'd actually use to record the show).

Making shelter.

Looks promising.  :)

Sawing. I hope he goes HD soon.

Scraping bark.

Slicing damp layers off of sticks.

Making a slingshot.

It's rather rare to be able to take a pic of the multi-tool without having it move. Bottom right.

Not too shabby.

1x07 - Canyonlands

Showing the SwissTool, before deflating the tire.

Scraping magnesium.

Showing the SwissTool. Maybe get a light technician?

Cannibalizing the bike.

Decent loot I'd say.

Corn chips are essentially edible candlesticks.

Cutting and notching for paiute deadfall traps.

1x08 - Plane Crash

Swisstool again.
Salvaging parts from the plane wreck.

Available gear.

Cutting foam out. He is also simulating an injured arm. Maybe a one-hand bladed MT would be a wiser choice?

This is the best example of a bad shot. He is behind the plane cutting away with the MT.

Wire saw busted. That's five bucks you won't see again.

Salvaging whatever he can.

Hare on a snare.

Scraping fluff.

1x09 - Lost at sea

Showing the SwissTool.

Cutting coconut.

Collecting greenery to put in raft's container, and collect condensation.

Getting into conch shell.

Cleaning conch meat.

The condensation method worked. Not much, but it's clean water.

Getting into snail and cleaning it.

1x10 - Behind the scenes.

There is new footage of Les walking through the trees in a forest, and making fire, as he narrates intros to footage of previous episodes.

He used a multi-tool to start a fire, as part of the narration. I cannot identify it, but the episode features the Wave and SwissTool anyway.

SwissTool, from 1x05 - Canadian Arctic.

SwissTool, from 1x06 - Mountain.

SwissTool, from 1x08 - Plane Crash.

OG Wave, from 1x02 - Arizona Desert.

OG Wave, from 1x03 - Costa Rica.

And that wraps up the season nicely.

Well then, that's Season 1 covered.

Les is a great host. Considering the fact that he's alone, not only to survive, but to also film himself doing it, the show is mindblowingly good. The camera shots are excellent, as if he had a proper crew with him. He is also a great narrator, both on the spot and post-edit. I never feel bored watching him. He is active, skilled, and funny.

There has been a nice variety of locations. Dry, wet, hot, cold. Beautiful scenery, professional cinematography, and excellent opportunities to demonstrate survival skills.

The show has an effect I did not fully anticipate. It makes you hungry.  :D
Watching Les starve, chewing on wild edibles and the occasional critter, makes you appreciate the comfort of a home, and prompts a walk to the fridge.

In conclusion, two thumbs up.  :2tu:
