7x01 - Fan Challenge

Les teaches winner of a fan submission contest, amateur filmmaker Joseph McConnell, about wilderness survival in the remote Ontario wilderness.

He showed him a wide variety of knives and tools.
There's the Ultimate Survival Knives, Camillus hatchet, machete, saw, folder, paracord, mylar blankets, fishing gear, canteens.
Show content

Les asked Joe to pick the two top priority items in his mind.
He chose the steel bottle and Camillus hatchet, which had a ferro rod.
Show content

Les tried out a pocket chain saw.
Show content

He had the Camillus Les Stroud fixed blade with him.
Show content

Les spotted a grouse. But he missed it.
Show content

The third day Les presented a selection of useful items, and he gave him matches and an orange trash bag, for roofing.
Show content

All in all, a great episode. A bit different than what we'd been used to, but a very interesting one nonetheless.

He showed a nice knot, so I thought I'd post the tutorial.  :D

Having the cord go around a tree, you have the end.
Take the end over the other line
Show content

Thread the end through the loop, around the line three times.
Show content

Go around and through the big loop.
Show content

Pull the end forward.
Show content

Slowly push the three small knots so they line up nicely.
Show content

If you want to tighten the cord, just pull the line and push the knot along.
Show content

To lock it off, just do a simple knot at the end.

Maybe Les can earn the knot badge?  :P

That's a very handy knot for guy lines and the like.  Not massively load bearing perhaps, but great for adding tension.  Great work as always RP. :salute:

7x07 - Patagonia

Les retraces the last steps of experienced Argentinan hiker Laureano Emanuel Santos on the circuit track of Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia to investigate how tragedies can occur even on well-traveled wilderness trails.

Thus, this episode is mostly Les hiking along, and talking about safety, survival TV, and caution.

Camillus Fuerza

The only instance of a knife is halfway through the episode, when Les cuts his boots open to let his feet breathe while walking.

Amici,
Great job!! But one mistake in tool identification.. In the episode, "South Pacific", Les uses the SURGE (old style) and not a stainless steel Wave.. You can see this when he utilizes the saw function, as well as the overall size of the tool in a closeup as he prepares to take apart his air tank regulator..

Cheers,
Serge

Thanks.  :)

I'm not sure which one it is now.

The Surge's thumb hole is much longer than the Wave's.
This is from the episode. Does the thumb hole look long enough to be a Surge?

Amici,
I'll upload a screenshot over the weekend since I have the DVD set. Actually, "south Pacific" is one of my favorite episodes. Must be the USN in me.. There definitely is a scene that clearly shows that it's a Surge..

what's also interesting, is that it's the only episode that he actually uses one before he went all out Charge TTI for the rest of the season..

Cheers,
Serge

Amici,
Here as promised, are pics of Les using what I believe is the Surge in the "South Pacific" episode. Excuse the clarity, since these were snapped from a projection screen, so they can be a tad blurry. But I cleaned them up as best I could..

Amici,
You can clearly see in pics 1 & 4 from the size of the plier head, as well as the overall scale of the MT in Les's hand that this is the almighty Surge and not the Wave.

Also, if you look at starting from the top of the tool, it shares the same dimensions as the Surge does as well.

Cheers,
Serge

Amici,
You know what, I didn't even notice that.. Great minds must think alike huh?   I am still convinced that Les is using a Surge in this episode, I believe there is a website that documents this.. I do recall that Les did say that he prefers the Charge TTI for all of his Survival needs when in the field also.

It could be that there where some slight changes to the plier head during production, or it could be that Les is using a Canadian produced version of the Surge also.. Don't forget that the manufacture of popular models be they Swiss Army or Leatherman  multi-tools vary from country to country where they are also produced in those cases. But again, I'm still gonna stick by the statement that the tool is 100% Surge and not wave for this one..

Cheers,
Serge

The Wave locking tabs have ridges.
The Surge's locking tabs have a single dimple.

Not to mention the tool at the other side of the blade looking nothing like the Surge scissors or t-shank holder.
As well as the obvious groove at the side, which only the Wave has.
Yep, that's a Wave folks.
