(All the) Ways of carrying a SAK?
on: May 10, 2017, 10:05:00 PM
This is recurring topic, so let's collect 'em all!  :D

Just to get the list started:

  • Sheath carry in belt
  • Pocket carry
  • Put it in a bag
  • Pocket carry, but using belt hanger
  • Pocket carry, but using a suspension clip attached to the key ring
  • Pocket carry using a custom pocket clip
  • Dangling from a lanyard around your neck
  • Kydex slip sheath

So, come on, please add any and all smart/creative/stupid/thread derailing/legendary impractical methods you have used, seen or can think of. And if you wonder if two different things may be pretty much the same thing, no, they aren't, explicit is better than implicit.

I use method number 5 :tu: Once I started suing suspension clips on SAKs I never looked back  :like: It is by far the easiest way for me to carry then :tu: I have carried everything from an Executive all the way up to a Swisschamp like this and they all.pocket way better with the suspension clip  :like: :like:

I used a home made suspension clip (made from a picture hanger) for some time before buying the real, fake P7 type clips. LOL

I also have the Victorinox clip on black belt sheath. It is so light though, I am always checking to see if it is still there!  So, my preferred way to carry my Wenger SI is suspension clip in pocket. If I decide to carry my Pioneer instead, it has a lanyard and goes in the belt sheath.

Another classic carry is in the top of a boot.

I mainly use #2, but occasionally #3 on a trip (in with the water bottle, rain coat, guide book, etc.)

Front left pocket unless I am in my hiking pants, then it is  sheath carry

It's not failure if you learn something from it

Wallet!

With a Alox Excelsior you can do that. It weights and bulks nothing!  :D

4.Pocket carry, but using belt hanger
5.Pocket carry, but using a suspension clip attached to the key ring
6.Pocket carry using a custom pocket clip

My carry is just a little bit different, I carry my SAK on a strap attached to my belt loop.

So may I suggest:
5¾. Pocket carry, using a strap attached to the belt loop.

Updated list, do correct me if I missed something in the posts.

Sorry, Mactire404, it seems lists here don't support fractional numbering, so it ended up between the previous 5 and 6 instead... :)

  • Sheath carry in belt
  • Pocket carry
  • Put it in a bag
  • Pocket carry, but using belt hanger
  • Pocket carry, but using a suspension clip attached to the key ring

  • Kydex slip sheath
  • Pocket / waist band /  belt carry in clip sheath
  • In the top of a boot

I always free pocket carry, don't use any of the other stuff cause I don't like stuff attached to to my sak's, aesthetically and because it gets in the way when using.
I do however either carry on my small pocket or in my front pocket along with my leather coin sheeth, so it always keeps it straight, and more importantly doesn't scratch the scales, I never carry anything else in the same pocket.
However I wear jeans 90% of the time, so I don't have much problem with stuff falling out  ;)

Carry it in my jacket when I'm wearing one as well

My wife is carrying her blue Victorinox Classic Sailor (a gift from me) in sheath sitting inside her bag with other stuff: wallet, keys, cell, lipstick etc. The sheath is cheapo, but at least protects scales from scratching.

Mine carries the standard red Executive i gave her years ago in her bag along with all the other stuff, it's scratched up but still looks good.  :D
Not deep scratches, just susface scratches from use, i think i even like that worn mate look on cellidor better than the mirror shine look when it's brand new...

I've been using the Nite-Ize S-Biner as a variation on the classic suspension clip for the last 5 years:

I really like that it can be unclipped quickly when you want to use the keyring side tools like awl or large flathead. I normally clip it to the corner of my LFP.

The vic belt clip (clipped to belt or top of waistband) works well to dangle the heavier 111mm's in LFP if you get the lanyard length just right.

I also carry a Vic Alox Bantam in my wallet (Saddleback small bifold) on light edc days. At 6mm thick it disappears. Combined with a Rambler in coin pocket and a bladeless Micra on the keys it covers most bases.

From time to time I have taken an old pair of jeans and cut enough material from the bottom of a pants leg keeping the bottom seam and made a pocket just big enough for a SAK and then sewn it between the front right pocket and right rear pocket on a pair of jeans keeping the seam even with the top of the right rear pocket.

It blends in with the other pockets and you don't even notice that you are carrying a knife.

If you're wearing a jacket you can wear a sak around your neck and under the armpit like a sling bag. It's discreet enough and unless you're frisked you're good.

I have a couple Tec P-7 suspension hooks with Maratac clips attached. It allows me to move them to whatever SAK I choose to carry.  P-7 clips while great are just too expensive to have more that a couple.
