Not Really A Mod, But...
on: May 11, 2017, 04:23:58 AM
I figured the folks who post here would be knowledgeable about this kind of thing.

I recently acquired a Rough Rider barlow with sawcut bone scales, and it has a protruding rivet on one side. It's rather unpleasant to scrape your finger against, as there's a miniscule but sharp lip at the end.
So, with the bone scales in mind, what's a good way to remedy this? I'm concerned peening might fracture the scales, and grinding/sanding the rivet down might compromise the integrity of the knife  ???

You should be good to sand down the rivet.   :tu:   :tu:

I agree with Zoid :tu:

If you worry about sanding off the peen then sand most of it off and then take a small ball peen hammer and flatten the end out just a wee bit :cheers: :cheers:

Alrighty, next time I have time I'll sit down with the Dremel and shave it down a bit. I've made small mods and repairs to various knives and tools, but messing with rivets is a bit out of my comfort zone.
It's not an expensive knife or anything, but I am planning to carry it, so wish me luck  :D

So if anyone was interested in  an update, here it is;

I actually ended up doing the job with a file, because the Dremel seemed a bit extreme for such soft metal.

It worked! . . . Except I did slip once and slice the bone a little  :facepalm:

I like updates.   :tu:   I don't have a dremel and can relate to slipping with the file.   :facepalm:

I have a Dremel and I can relate both to slipping with a file and slipping with the Dremel. In general slipping with the Dremel is worse since it works through material faster.

A safer way is to cover with masking tape and then file.

Of course you're right. I even had a roll of painter's tape to hand that would be perfect. Guess it was just impatience on my part, which rarely pans out well.
