Power Access Owners BEWARE
on: May 20, 2017, 01:26:15 PM
I used my Power Access last night to cut a small tinder block in half and this happened.

I'd feel better if something was broken on it, but it isn't- it is just the cutout in the blade that fits into the locking tab is slightly angled, so when pressure is put on the blade the lock tab lifts and the knife bends backwards.

I tried all of the other tools as well and the same thing happened with the dedicated flathead.  I sent the pics off to SOG last night and they have been sent on to the appropriate department, so hopefully I will hear back from them soon.  I love the Power Access, but this is a MAJOR problem in my book.

Impossible! this tool was inspected and approved by the same people who inspected and approved the legendary Powerduo!

Maybe you are using it wrongly - like when you lot broke the tough-tool

Impossible.... this one isn't broken, it's defective.

Seriously, this is a major concern, as there is serious potential for someone's hand to slip when the whole thing suddenly moves.  I would strongly suggest everyone tries this (maybe wear some gloves, just in case) with their Power Access.  It doesn't take a lot of pressure to make it fail, so don't hurt yourselves trying to force it.  I can actually grab the blade with my fingertips (by the sides of course) and make it fail.  I'll try to get a video up today that shows what and how it happens.  I just wanted to get this up ASAP as I don't want anyone getting hurt by these.

I'm not saying this is common or anything- mine is defective and it could just be "the one."

I just think people need to know and check theirs.

Yikes!

That was the only tool in the new line up that I had any kind of confidence in (from a design perspective, based purely on online images). That looks like a severe failing of a very simple function, which as you say, could lead to a nasty injury.

I would like to hope this is just a rogue tool, but my own experience with SOG leaves me less than optimistic.

I have to admit, after seeing how mine was designed, i had wondered if this was a possibility. However, I am pleased to say that I was unable to replicate the issue Grant is having, even with significant amounts of force applied to my tool.

I can overextend tool if I also intentionally hold the lock open, but I don't see any way to accidentally disengage the lock during use.

The looming question of faulty design or defect qc issue? Pretty much hope it's the latter. Good heads up though GL  :salute:

Oh no. The one new SOG I was kinda waiting to get later on and now I am not so sure.

I have yet to hear of any tool from any manufacturer that didn't have a QC issue at one point or another.  I had a Sidekick with one screwdriver not ground down.  It happens, and I wouldn't suggest that you write off any tool or brand because of one problem.

So far it seems like I'm the only one, and this is the second Power Access I have had in my hands to play with.

I only mentioned it to warn folks who had them to try it out, not to scare people off buying them.  Issues happen, especially on an initial run.

I will check mine when it arrives and let you know.
Mine has arrived   :mail:   and been checked out. It does not have the problem shown in the OP. I put quite a bit of force on it. None of the tools moved. Seems like a solid tool. I will be carrying it next week.

Oh, and I got it to be flippy with some oil on the hinge points. Flips nicely.   :tu:  I just need to figure out how not to smash my knuckles.

Open it like a butterfly knife. If that make sense. That's how I do it with my PowerLocks.

Just want to chime in and say I couldn't replicate this issue on my PA either. I put some significant force on the tools and they held.
But I can see how this defect could come about. All it takes is a bit of weakness in the lockup spring.

Just got mine. Initially mine would over-extend at first. This was only occuring on the handle with the file. I could easily correct the issue by pressing the lock tab into the notch a little. After playing with the tool a little and working the individual implements a bit, the issue seems to have corrected itself. Everything locks up firmly now

I'm glad to hear that (so far at least) I am the only one to have this issue, at least to a serious degree.  Either way, if anyone else should have these problems I am certain SOG would take care of it.
