Cost of your EDC
on: May 21, 2017, 05:04:18 PM
I just read this thread on a similar forum and wanted to (again) shamelessly copy the idea and ask you,
how much (money-wise) is your EDC worth? I'll start (no clothes, vehicles or jewelry included)

EDC knife - $70-90
Multitool - usually $40-$80
SAK - $20-30
Light - $20
Bag/man purse - $25
Backup folder - $40
Wallet - $0 (I don't use one)
Pen - 0$ (I don't carry one)
Watch - $0 (I don't use one)
Phone - $200

So my EDC is usually between 415 and 500 dollars depending on my specific carried items that day.
Don't worry, the thread is wife-secured! Talk freely   :salute:

Potentially, the watches load it heavily and so does including the actual cost of the phone.

It is not a thread to show off or about bragging, just a mere curiosity experiment as someone might be surprised after realising how much do they tote around every day.
I would have never guessed my EDC was so costly and I had never wondered about that before reading the thread...

Interesting topic.

Lets see, I'll price out my off day carry.  Some items are actually carried everyday *.

$2-$5  G Shock.  I buy all my watches from the flea market. *
$2       Wenger Wallet.  I found it at the flea market. *
$5       Fenix LD02.  Yup the first one I bought I found at the flea market. *
$10     LM Squirt P4.  Part of a lot buy off the bay of fleas.

$2       Fisher bullet.  Yup, flea market. *
$15     Victorinox Belt Hanger.  New. *
$15     Pocket Wrench 2.  New.
$20     4/7s Red LED ATOM AAA Ti light.  Light is very wonky.  I'd never buy 4/7s again.  New. *

?         Leather sheath for 84mm SAK and Squirt.  I made it from an old leather handbag purchased for $1.  Flea market

Why can't we have such flea markets? The knock off stuff on flea markets here costs more than the originals you paid for Aloha

Anyway since I'm on my summer carry it looks like this (I'm using the prices I've found online since some things I got in trades and some had great discounts)
Alox Bantam - $20
Classic SD - $10
Pen - something cheap I put in my pocket by accident so no cost to me (actual cost was probably $1)
Wallet - $20
Phone - $120
Ledlenser K2 - $10

My carry varies so much, it's hard to know where to start. I also carry a number of modded tools, which complicates the cost even further. Not including the phone, the total may be less than £50, or I could carry a £200+ slippy with a tool that cost around £180 in donors and parts, and a SAK that cost around the same in donors and parts, and a £50 light.

Generally, total cost varies between £50 and £500, but is usually around £100-£150 at a guess. The current values of those items are probably less due to the meaningful lives they have led.

I've gotten really lucky but if I factor in the time spent walking around and gas to get there then .  I'm still surprised what I find tho there sure are week when the pickings are slim.

When I was sniping off the bay of fleas I wasn't doing to bad either.  Certainly not the bargains the flea market has but still not bad.

Nah.

If memory serves there was a concession/student card in it and a train pass.

Either someone was discarding the wallet, or I wasn't the first person to find it and the first finder swiped all the cash / bank cards.

I just read this thread on a similar forum and wanted to (again) shamelessly copy the idea and ask you,
how much (money-wise) is your EDC worth? I'll start (no clothes, vehicles or jewelry included)

EDC knife - $70-90
Multitool - usually $40-$80
SAK - $20-30
Light - $20
Bag/man purse - $25
Backup folder - $40
Wallet - $0 (I don't use one)
Pen - 0$ (I don't carry one)
Watch - $0 (I don't use one)
Phone - $200

So my EDC is usually between 415 and 500 dollars depending on my specific carried items that day.
Don't worry, the thread is wife-secured! Talk freely   :salute:
LOL!
I am not sure if I really want to think about how much my EDC is.

Nice to see you're so lucky Aloha (and this is not a competitiion to see who saves more cash on what they get, Sea Monster) but I was referring to MSRP or selling prices, as most of my EDC was also acquired second hand, used or at a bargain price at flea sales.
For instance, my Spyderco Pacific Salt costs $75 at stores, or more, but I've bought mine for $55, and the second one on the eBay for $62, same with the Spirit ($35) and most other stuff.
I meant the price or value that the things we carry actually sell for or cost when new.

In my pockets today:

Phone £300 (RRP, I paid £250)
Vic Rambler £20 (RRP, I paid about £8 from felinevet I think)
Eagletac D25AAA £25
Cheapo carabiner £2 or so
GEC #47 £75
Sharpie fineliner £2
Rhodia pad £1
Bellroy wallet £60
Vic Spirit £75 (modded; priceless ;))

About £560 all-in.  I suppose my EDC is usually about that - the single most expensive item will always be my phone, and the rest of it doesn't vary that much.  It really just depends which knife I'm carrying (ranges from £7 to about £100) and if I'm carrying a multi (could be nothing, maybe as much as £160).

Eagletac D25A Clicky (Nichia) - $57
Keysmart Ti Extended - $40
SAK Rambler with custom scales - $56

Gotham Railroad Pocket Watch - $45
Kisetsu Natsu Wallet (Crazy Horse Leather) - $55
Nokia C2-01 phone - $35

SAK Pruner (SB) - $53
Hank - $20

Total of $361. Would be a lot more if I didn't enjoy my freedom from the world of smart phones. :) Oh and I can't as yet afford the Tissot pocket watch I've been lusting after. :)

This is all just on body carry. If I were to include my shoulder bag carry the price would be considerably more.

thank you all for your replies! Addressing each of you...

kkokkolis I knew your camera equipment would be expensive, but I didn't want to include EDC Bags, backpacks and such because they (bags + contents) rocket up the prices. Mybag is only $25 but It's contents might very well add two zeroes to that number's right some days

hiarethus, truly a modded Spirit is beyond price tags, but the tool itself has to have been acquired or bought somehow!   :salute:

pomsbz, you're lucky your work, job, free time or happiness don't require or include a smartphone in any way. As much as I use it, find it useful and enjoy it, it can be a headache sometimes, and an expensive one too

My toys:

To replace? I don't have a rider on my insurance for that. I probably should.

My bag is $130 bucks. Two flashlights, totaling about $60. Knife, about $20. Other knife, 30. Vic Compact, 30. LM Rebar, about $60. E4, irreplacable technically, probably $30. Doc Allen with add ons... 35-40. Other tools, 30ish. 2 usb battery packs, chargers, blue tooth... call it a hundred. Phone.... 200? They don't make this model any more, I'd be sad, I really like it. FAK, about 20 less my test kit and 4 days of my meds. General prep items (heat sheet, lighter, spare batteries, contractor bags), probably 50-60. Spare socks, $8. Watch cap, gloves, $20. Towel, $1. Headlamp, $40. Watch, $25.

Wallet, $80 excluding contents.

Glasses. $400.

Keys. Priceless. Nothing has an address, and it would cost maybe $50 to replace everything including the mini SAK. Car keys.... steal my car, please! But if you know where the doors those keys go to are....

Damn..... And that doesn't even touch on the days I carry a sidearm.
