What type of collector/acquirer are you?
on: May 22, 2017, 05:10:19 PM
I love reading about the great debate on whether to open a new in package tool or not.  Its also neat to hear about those who have no issues not only opening a NIP tool but also USING it.  Early on I was on both side of the debate and in reality nothing has changed .

I appreciate those who leave the tool in its original package and enjoy the pristine nature of it.  I also love seeing those tear the package open with reckless abandonment and use the tool as it was meant.

Where do you stand?

I usually can't stand it and tear the package open or open the box :D I like to collet but I get more joy out of using (even if it is light use on some) I do have a tool or 2 extra in some models that really haven't ever gotten use though

If I buy a knife/SAK/MT NIP, I just let it there and try to aquire another one to use.

The only problem with this is that the second one usually ALSO comes NIP... So I'm back at square one and have to buy another...

I usually buy used tools because they're cheaper and also come pre-scratched and tarnished, so I never have to worry about whether I should use something or not out of fear of messing it up.  On the rare occasion I buy something new I generally don't keep the original packaging unless I have accessories or warranty paperwork that I want to keep track of by keeping it or them in the packaging.

I want everybody to open their packaged tools and enjoy them - this makes my pristine tools go up in value

Buy toys in boxes not clamshells  (e.g. victorinox ) - this way you can open it, fondle it and then put it back in the box, and sell it as new.

usually the same people that advice others to modify their cars, also advice them to make sure they buy a totally stock car, as any modifications will point to racing/off road use etc.

Almost all my purchases were to be used/tried, so I voted to open and enjoy. The ones I didn't open and use were spares or gifts, or occasionally ones I regretted getting.

Ripper here. I mostly buy to use, with my Black Alox collection being the exception.  Very rarely used, some not used at all. It mostly sits in a display cabinet looking awesome. I do have some other knives that are in the display cabinet, but they all come out to play every once in a while.
I do keep all boxes, in another very large box, in case I ever want to sell something. Wishful thinking, as I yet have to sell any piece of gear I ever bought.

I always buy N.I.B. with the intention to use, but experience taught me I never do, so I'll buy the same tool again, that way I'll own a user and a "new in box" collector.

In case of the Spirit, it took four of them before I started using one, the first one was my RT Spirit, which I quickly found too nice to use, so I bought a regular butterblade Spirit as user, but once I held it in my hands, I also wanted to keep one of those N.I.B., so I bought another regular butterblade Spirit, and another one ...  ::)   The last one is a user, and it's my most used tool today.

I try to use all my tools as that's what they are designed and made for. If there's something that won't get used, I'll pass it on somehow. I have also greatly benefitted from other kind souls doing this.

I try not to rip the packaging but all the tools I buy I use.

I have some retired and inherited tools that I will never use.

I'm a collector. Try and buy new, but that's usually not an option with older models. Everything goes in trays, sorted by brand, size, model, logo, etc. If the item came in a box, the box is saved. If it came in a blister pack the pack is opened and discarded.

I mostly use what I buy , most recently it has been some SAK's and a couple Mora's that will be used. :tu:
I do have some knives that are occasionally used , a few that are pure safe queens and a
couple church knives  All users get put in the rotation , just depends on my mood , or activity.

If I got it that way, it stays that way.  Newer production knives (ten years old or less) I always just use, but save the box. If it's older than that, and I get it boxed, it stays boxed, which I typically only buy if the price is good.   I have some rare ones which I got used, and still carry albeit only when I know I'm not going to be using it hard.
