A jack knife is usually a mid size knife with two blades that are on the same side, usually a large clip blade and a small pen blade, almost like a small trapper. Barlow knives count, but trappers don't

I know, I know. The thing is, shops around here do not carry American traditionals. I do have a Böker trapper and a Gerber stockman, but that's it.  And I don't like buying something unfamiliar on the Internet.

I took this definition from Great Eastern Cutlery's site.

Jack Knife
A simple rugged pocket knife with a single blade or both blades at only one end. Blades in a Jack Knife often have square tang end to hold them in half-open position.

To myself even the term,"jack knife" is a bit meaningless. As I understand it the original term meant a knife that,"could"(my emphasis)have one or two blades that pivot at one end of the knife;the master blade being of a clip point design and the secondary blade a smaller spear pen blade that may or may not have half stops or bolsters at one or both ends or no bolsters at all. Sound confusing? It gets worse. Size is also figured into the equation and the generally accepted norm(according to Bernard Levine anyway)is from 2 1/2 inches to 5 1/2 inches closed.Anything below that is to be called a pen knife and anything above it a variety of names from jumbo jack to navaja to folding bowie to dirk and anything else under the sun.
Still confused? Hang on;it gets even better. They also have double ended jacks(two large blades;one at either end)and a variety of named patterns that will make your head spin!
I much prefer to call them just what they are:knives! Just my opinion folks;your mileage may vary.

Levine lists over a 100 varieties of jack knife/pen knife/multiblade knife, with the distinctions between them at times being rather amorphous.

Here are a couple of pages showing some of the more common patterns.

On a personal note I like Stockman, Mini Trapper, Copperhead and Canoe (numerous of each). Don't care for Congress, Peanut, or Barlow  (grand total of one Barlow).

I hear that, you never know for sure what you're getting into buying online. Most of the time though, amazon.com has good deals on traditional folders, I've gotten a fair amount of mine from there, and haven't had any problems. Either way, Böker and Gerber are awesome blades!  :tu:

Not that confusing if you realize that jack knife is only a generic term for a one or two blade knife, with blades on one end.
Jack knives are then broken down into distinct styles aka patterns.
Barlows, copperheads, teardrops, gunstocks, sodbusters, all jack knives.

Traditional pocket knives were often designed with a purpose in mind. A banker or student would not need a large trapper.  A banker or student would need a sharp pencil, thus the little pen knife.

A copperhead typically has one or two blades on one end with the bolster raised to cover the sharp tang corners. A jack knife.
Case and Frost make a knife they call a copperhead with a blade on each end. It's not a copperhead, both companies borrowed the copperhead name and used it as a marketing gimmick.

I just realized it can get confusing.  :ahhh
My favorite jack.

I got a nice group of Colt knives awhile ago, but I never saw American traditionals in a pack again...

Forgot about this Western States Jack. It has celluloid covers. I dont keep it close to my other knives in case it starts to gas out.

The Copperhead has two equal-length blades at the large end of the knife (top).

The Mini Trapper has two equal-length blades (one normally a spay) at the small end of the knife (bottom).
