Torx Drivers
on: October 14, 2008, 03:48:45 AM
For christmas I want to get a torx set of some kind, what would be the best kind to work on knives made from most manufacturers (benchmade, kershaw, spyderco, etc), there is a bit set from Benchmade, would this do the trick?

You should be able to get an inexpensive bit set from just about any hardware store.  Or, if there's a Home Depot near you, there's a Husky screwdriver that has three extra double ended Torx bits in the handle for a total of 8 bits, including:

T-4
T-5
T-6
T-7
T-8
T-9
T-10
T-15

I think it ran somewhere around $3.99 and I've yet to find a Torx on a multitool or knife I couldn't get with it.

we just got this set last week! it works really nice and had nice reviews.
it fits very nice in the hand with good ergonomics and decent bits.

but like Def said any good hardware store would have a decent set.

Funny that to demonstrate a screwdriver set used to disassemble knives and MT's, you used a MT that's riveted together.  :D

What you really want is a Wiha Security Bit Set.  A bit pricey, but excellent quality, German, and you'll have tools that *nobody* else has.  (unless they bought the same thing...)  >:(

Wiha 39 Piece Security Bit Set #71997

The nice thing is that you can always use a security Torx (tm)  bit on a non-security Torx (tm) fastener.  Plus, they include spanner and tri-wing specialty bits that you can use to take apart your TV cable or satellite box for ummmmm....    cleaning and adjustment.  In fact, just about everything that you are never supposed to take apart can be takenaparted with this collection of fine tools.  Includes a nifty handle driver, plus a labeled and organized plastic carry box.

I'm trying to nano-glue a belt loop to mine for EDC.  :ahhh

I really want that security set.  I did have one before (not as good quality) but over the years my brother has "borrowed" most of the bits  >:(

$50 isn't bad... I'd snag it at that price!

Doesn't that suck?  And they are made somewhere like Gerstinkendingolfunken, which is probably less than 300 miles for you and over 3000 for me.   :pok:

I Froogled them and you can get the Torx(tm) only set for less than $20 . . .  but you won't be able to clean the earwigs and silverfish out of your cable box.

Group Buy ??   :mail:

Whoa, easy bigboy.  Whilst I doubt Def wants a n00b running a group buy (especially with all my naff comments) I'd be glad to help you out.  I think if I ship it as a "gift" we can avoid tarrifs and whatnot, no?  ;)

PM me with all the name/location/postal code details so we can get a firm grip on exactly what this might cost.  Keep in mind US currency is an a bad state ... I may have to print some of my own to make the purchase.  Use pesos as a conversion for a more stable estimate.

The security Torx(tm) only kit can be had for around $20 US, while the full blown rig with additional posidrive, tri-wing, and spanner bits as I posted above runs $50.  With that kit you can take apart anything-- even the flavor extrusion carburettor responsible for infusion in choco hobnobs.  There, I said it. . . .  :ahhh

Let me know how I can help.

cheers-

Defender, where can you get the Husky set of Torx drivers? The Home Depots in Ontario don't have that.
