Grail knife: Tapio Wirkkala Puukko
on: June 02, 2017, 06:08:29 PM
Don't ask me why, but I've wanted this knife since the first time I saw a busted up one living in a toolbox.

Recently my cousin phoned, with the news he has a gift for me, "not new", but something I really wanted.....

Honestly could not believe my eyes when he took it out.  :woohoo:

Sorry, no before pics, the handle was a bit dirty and the brass pretty dark, and there was a considerable chip in the edge about 1cm back from the tip.

There were some signs of use on the blade as well.

I got the chip out with very little effort, everything else cleaned up and polished in a jiffy.....

Gave the leather of the sheath some long overdue food as well, unfortunately that thong at the top partially broke off.

Not sure what the steel is, but it takes a nice edge, and easily.

Only one complaint, the makers mark was very feint and somehow I got rid of most of it while fixing the edge

Without further delay:

Awesome GG!!!! Congrats!!!!!

 :woohoo:

It was a Grail of mine too!!! Great knife and a great user...Lost mine from the 80's in the fire, got a used one last year...a timeless design!!!!

The stamp has, besides Tapio's name, "Hackman Stainless Finland". So it's Stainless but I've never found anyone who knows what stainless.

Yours is in better shape than mine!!!  My sheath has a repaired loop as well...the orig was kinda thin.

It's like a Cold Steel Finn Bear, only (much) better!

  Len Thompson loved the Wirkkala Puukko so he designed and produced the Sisu for Cold Steel...

And the Finn Bear as the affordable alternative to the $200+ Sisu

Congrats.  The sheath looks like with a fix its got some life left.  The blade certainly has quite a bit of life.  Enjoy.
