And last, a true cheff (or Sak lover) always washes his knives (or Sak's) by hand, NEVER in a diswasher.

Here, here...!!!  :cheers:  +1  :hatsoff:

Added the part's in bold to complement your statement  :salute:

My new-ish Explorer has a glass magnifier. I think they switched back, but it still doesn't have the 8x magnification of the old one.

And here's a page on aluminum corrosion, if anyone is interested;

I wonder sometimes why some used SAKs I get have considerably more oxidation on the liners around the pivot points and they remain gritty even though 112 percent free of dirt. Somebody with really, really salty perspiration? Just being left in mineral rich water?
none of mine have gotten that since they've been in my position, but 2 or 3 I've gotten have it right around the pivots. I'm hesistant to sand it away though, as it is a stable oxide, and it doesn't really impact the function. it just feels like it's full of dirt

Prfsantos is right (never thought I'd say that :dd:)

Not entirely correct...

As WoodsDuck says they were glass (8x magnification with the grey plastic frame), then plastic (5x, one piece) now they're glass again (6x with a clear plastic frame).  The latest version was introduced around 2012.

Ok cool.

So, what I am getting is that each-and-all of the magnifying glasses on Victorinox are good enough that some people prefer them.  No horror stories about one type that just sucks.  And IF i want a SAK with the best magnification power, I should look for one of the older glass ones with the gray plastic housing.

The field of view on the grey ones is limited compared to the later models as the actual lens is smaller.  The frame on the clear plastic ones doesn't seem as robust.  The phillips driver on the older models with the grey frame is slightly longer than on the newer models, but IIRC there have been reports of it being easier to damage.

I can't think of any reason to seek out the one piece plastic lenses over the modern two piece.

If possible, compare the different lenses and see which one works better for you. It's a balance between magnification and visibility. In terms of quality, I think all of them are fine and durable.
