Double blade folders, plain & serrated
on: June 06, 2017, 03:42:47 PM
I'm thinking I might buy a double bladed folder, with one plain and one serrated blade. The first would be preferably a drop point (clip point acceptable) and the second a sheepsfoot. I've got the combo in the Surge and Charge, Swisstool and Spirit also but would like something slimmer for jeans pocket carry.
I would like that unobtainable Opinel like knife, but I can't find one.
I know of the Spyderco Dyad

The Byrd Wings

The Schrade Old Timer Double Blade Lockback

Do I miss any other? Any opinions for the above?

Thanks!

I believe Gerber and Cold Steel have done versions. The only one I have is the Byrd Wings Slipit, which unlike the locking version has stainless bolsters.

ColdSteel is called Lucky
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

The Stanley Max Edge Trapper had the spey fully serrated with the normal plain edge California Clip. They were made by Camillus several years ago, but can still be found for around $40 new in the pack.

Buck Ecco (in 3.25" or 3,75"), Byrd Wings Slipit, Gerber Double Take.

The Spyderco, Byrd and Schrade knives all suffer the same ergonomical defect: there's always one blade's eye prying into your hand. The Buck knives are better in that respect. The handles have a groove to guide your thumb to the large liner plate. There are Japanese and US made versions. The liners of the US version are stronger and stiffer. The Gerber fits your blade requirements and is lightweight. The blades have thumb studs and are liner locked, but you'll need slender, feminine hands.

Nice options. I like the Gerber blade shapes the most, although they are on the short side. But it seems to be discontinued, as most of these knives!
Buck and Leatherman are nice also.

Is there any available in a European store?
Or is any of you borred by such a knife so much that he would part with it?

I might be willing to trade the Double Take against a nice SAK or an Opinel. The knife is in excellent condition.

Which SAK or Opinel would you be interested at and would accept for that Gerber?

Currently, I'm "in need" of a Vic Bushcrafter. I'm interested in other brand blade/saw combos as well. Two-blade 100mm gardeners, Opinel #8 pruner and spearpoint. Anything interesting of Greek origin perhaps?

We aren't very famous for our steel.
I could send you both #8 garden knives, spearpoint (my favorite) and pruner. Is that a deal?

I can buy unpainted individually for 25€ (roughly the price of the Gerber) and painted full set with saw for 50€. In girly colors strictly.

Your choice.

If you want the set, you should offer a compensation for the saw, which costs as much as the other two (spearpoint 10€, pruner 15€, saw 25€, set 50€). Another interesting knife or so.

The Cold Steel Lucky is too pricey for my taste. Looks great though, as does the S&W. But my next one's gonna be the B2 probably.

Of course the recent acquisition of a Swiss Bianco Carver SW obviates my need for a dyad.

I like all these. It's not just a case of functionality, I also like the aesthetics. The symmetry and balance perhaps? I am happy to see that Ronald likes them too.
The blades of a Surge in a flat framelock folder would be perfect.

The dyad is one of my favorite knife patterns, has been for a long time.

If I remember correctly, the Gerber was advertised as "a modern day trapper, for modern day cowboys". Of course they were right about the modern part, but dyads will never replace the trapper, which has both blades pivoting on the same end. In fact, I suspect their slogan did a lot to make the pattern less popular than it could have been. Ergonomics probably played a part as well. I think it's very cool that some manufacturers haven't yet given up on the dyad.

I went to the store today. Unfortynatelly the #8 Serpette (Pruning Knife) is unavailable at the moment. They need 15 days or so to stock again.
So I went on and bought the #10 Serpette, which isn't just bigger, but also more curved, a real sickle. Just add a hammer and there you go.
Look at the differences.
#8

#10

And the #10 was available in a plastic container, not the carton box.

I bought it. In my mind the deal still goes, since this is bigger, more expensive, more capable and more distinguished. But if you won't agree, I'll keep the #10 and buy a #8 for you when it will be available.

What do you think?

I like the #10 serpette, but I already have one. I'll send you the Gerber next wednesday, you''ll send me the spear point. The one Opinel  is ok, I won't feel bad about it if you promise not to feel bad about it either.

They had slimlines in the shop. Perhaps there is a #8 among them. I just have to find the time to go there again. Wednesday perhaps.
