74mm cap lifter
on: June 09, 2017, 07:35:54 PM
Hi,

I want to upgrade my Alox Executive with a caplifter and maybe a small screwdriver.

One way would be to cut the lifter profile into the nailfile and a small step into the tip of the orange peeler.
Has anyone done this before?

I also saw Wenger tools could be harvested for this (i.e. Pocket Tool):

What diameter do the pivot holes have on 65mm Wenger?

Thanks!
Say my name.

I cut the lifter profile into the peeler, not a very good solution if you plan to use the screwdriver heavily but I guessed that the file was more sensitive to heat.

Here's my topic on the subject.

Today I had enough and decided to go for it.

I chose a 58mm-Caplifter tool as a guide:

And then it was cutting wheel time. :D

After some polishing the finished result:

In action:

That looks great! :2tu:

I picked up a pre-owned Executive from the MTO Store recently, and was already planning on making some changes to it. I think this mod might be getting added to the list

What else are you thinking of? I have one laying around that just begs for some tweaks.

Not sure yet. I'm still at the throwing crazy ideas about stage. It might end up being one of those projects that never quite gets anywhere  ::)

I also thought about grinding a small step into the tip of the peeler to have two sizes of flathead drivers.

As the Vic Executive had been my most favorite SAK for decades, I'm curious as to what mods you're planning.

Been carrying mine every day for as long as I can remember.

But what about weakening the driver by moving the metal?
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

It's not exactly a high-torque driver to begin with really.

A) It's only a small driver, so torque won't be high.
B) The amount of material left is still about as wide as the blade of the driver, so it;s lo weaker than any other long driver would be.
C) Drink enough beer, and you won't care anyway  :drink:

I asked this somewhere else, too. Anyone thought about doing this on the nail file, instead? The tool is thicker and it's normal use puts less stress in it.

I did see a picture around here somewhere with a Executive lookalike that did just that, but that was how it was made from the factory. I considered it on the one I made but opted against it on the grounds that the heat treating on the file would be more delicate than on the orange peeler.

Any idea where that was? If I were to make it, I'd be using a manual file, so I don't think it would ruin the heat treatment of the tool.
