The last time I sent a tool in to the local Victorinox distributor they said it'd be a £10 charge if it needed repairing because of misuse. As it turned out, they replaced the tool FOC. I'd contact Vic US and see what they say.
Bear in mind El-C that they may replace the whole thing and then you wouldn't have your 77 Soldier - Just something to stipulate when you contact them.
