Compass Advice
on: June 20, 2017, 02:25:34 PM
After nearly 30 years service my trusty Silva compass is in need of replacement.
While getting my gear sorted out for a little tour to the Galloway Forest I noticed the base had a serious crack in it.  :ahhh
I cannot even remember the model number of it but it had a grey aluminium bezel which shows it's age!

The two I've narrowed down to are;
Silva Expedition 4
https://dash4it.co.uk/silva-compass-4-miltaire-6400-360.html?___store=d4it_en&gclid=CLndlJ6zzNQCFcm37QodQJMMpA

Suumo A-30
http://www.facewest.co.uk/Suunto-Compass-A30L.html

I just cannot decide!
Does anyone have any recommendations?

Both are good brands however the Silva you linked is in Mil's, unless your familiar with working in mil's go for the Expedition 4 compass https://dash4it.co.uk/accessories/accessory-type/compasses/silva-expedition-4-compass.html

Thanks Smashie, well spotted. :tu:

It is the Expedition 4 I'm thinking of but I managed to add the wrong link!  :twak:

I own a Silva and a Suunto, but not the exact same models you're thinking of buying.

The Silva compass was the first I ever bought (made the mistake of buying the Mils version ... I was only 15 years old or so when I bought it  ::)).  It's still going strong, it has picked up quite a bit of scars through the years, but it still works great.

The second one is a Suunto M3 global, which I bought last year.  I like this one more than the Silva, but that isn't really fair to the Silva, since it's about 24 years older than the Suunto (and the Suunto is more expensive ...).

Pros and cons on the Suunto:

Pros:

- a very stable and fast needle (but this one is the global version, so the needle system is different than on the one you're looking at)
- awesome luminous bezel ring (again, not completely the same on your model)
- the bezel ring is easier to turn, and can be turned more precisely (again ...)
- the plate is quite a bit thicker and looks more robust than the one on the Silva.

Cons:
- red markings work great during the day, or when using a normal flashlight in the dark, but they are a pain in the *ss when you're using a red light to preserve your night vision ...

Here's a pic of all my compasses:

Greetings from Belgium  :salute:,

Eric

Thanks for all the info Top Gear  :tu:

Maybe I should have just followed normal MtO custom & just bought both of them but I finally decided to go for the Silva Expedition 4.

No connection with Ray whatsoever but I must commend the service I received.
I ordered the Silva yesterday afternoon & it arrived this morning  :salute:

The timing of this thread is perfect, as I'm in the market for a new compass too.  I think I'm steering towards the Silva too.  Great rep and easy to find around here.

Although there has been a veritable shell game with the names of various compass makers, and who has the rights to what name in a given country, I have an old Silva Type 15 Ranger and would figure that the newer model (the 515) or the Ranger CL or CLQ would be compatible. Or the Brunton of similar features.
