Learning to make Sheaths
on: June 23, 2017, 10:45:28 AM
I've been trying some leatherwork lately. Still new at it though. This is a sheath I've made for a WW2 Kabar Commando I bought that didn't have a fitting sheath. I'm still waiting for a couple of extra long rivets I've ordered for the throat.

Pretty good!

The rivets are great for keeping the sheath thin by doing the same function as a welt.

Great work SAK-Sizzle!  I would have said the knife came with that sheath originally!

Thanks Mags and pfr. I copied an original sheath I have with another knife. I'm planning on doing a Kabar mk2 sheath next. Cheers for the replies :salute:

One thing I've seen on some videos: in the case of knives like this one, having a welt (or even another layer just the size of the blade) will make the blade sit  "flatter" in the sheath, i.e., the top part won't make a curve.

I don't know if I am making myself clear. Another layer under the blade would make up for the width of the hilt, so the back of the sheath would be straight.

Looks good to me.  I have made a couple smaller leather items and I can say its hard.  I am not good at all and I have the utmost respect for those talented individuals that turn out nice products.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Thanks pfr for the tip about the spacers, I should have shown a side view   I've included the best my phone can do this time. The back section down to just past the guard is double thickness. At the throat it's probably hard to see (because I've skived one down) it's 5 layers (13.5mm). So there's 2 welts down to the belly of the blade then skived down also.  Thanks again all.

I've messed up just enough leather work to know how good a job you've done on that sheath - very nice.

Same sheath with the rivets changed and another just finished for a Case Q knife.

May I make some sugestions?
Maybe next time place the "lock" near the pommel, where the hilt is thinner. It would make for a snugger fitting, less possibility for the knife to move.
Since it has a guard, you could put another button lock over it (slower deployment, more safety against loosing/accidental release).
You can use some elastic to make the strap to "get out of the way" when the button is opened. Less chance of accidentally cutting the leather loop.

The only other knife sheath I liked better was the Ontario 499's, back in the day my buddy had his fathers, and it was nice because of the stone and the two open grommets on the bottom so you could tie it off in any direction, but I carried my fathers kbar and would be like, mines bigger then yours :neener:

pfrsantos all suggestions are welcome thanks for the tips, keep them coming if you see anything else. Those are good ideas and thanks for the vid link, that's a H/Dty sheath. I've got some WW2 blades that need sheaths and I'm going to try and make sheaths close to what might have come with them if possible at this stage hence the pattern of the Kabar, although the colour and rivets are not right. Also they are, apart from that one, usually fairly basic in construction. There were however some that came with the keeper down by the guard as you suggest (Case amongst others), and  I do have a Case that needs a sheath (posted in fixed blades) so food for thought. I will look into the elastic retention to see how doable it is for me, interestingly I was considering the silent snaps as in the video since they came with some WW2 makers knives as well. Thanks again. :salute:

 Thanks JR. yes they are both good knives. I have some Vietnam blades. Camillus and Conetta MK2's also Camillus and Ontario JPSK's. Excellent that both of you have those knives passed on to you. The stone holder is useful, and going by the edges on a couple of the Kabar's (wartime) that I've bought they could have done with a stone as well.

Copied a Case sheath this time (not exactly) but close. This one I put the keeper up higher as pfrsantos  suggested. Still not totally happy with my edges and dying, stitching is ok I think just need more practice.
